Lunch along Rts. 70/40 in central Ohio Mon, 02/20/12 10:57 PM (permalink)
My wife and I are heading to the Midwest in early April. We'll be driving mostly west bound on Rt. 70 while in Ohio, but may be able to spend some time on 40 as well. I definitely intend to hit Henry's in West Jefferson for pie. But is that also a good place to eat lunch? And even if it is, I'm thinking it would be wise to eat lunch a little earlier to give myself a little time to rebuild my appetite for the pie.

The only place that looks convenient among the restaurants reviewed on this site is Tommy's Diner in Columbus. Would that be a good choice for lunch? Any other recommendations for lunch starting about an hour east of Columbus would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are willing to drive 20 miles  north  off 1-70, you  could go to one of my favorite  Roadfood places......................Crabill's.  There is no place like it.!!!

The  hamburgers are tiny and wonderful and the most fun is watching the gals make them.  You really should not miss it.

Starliner Diner is a great place. I recommend the Southwest Chicken Salad. The description on the website does it no justice. Crabills is a great place.

While Henry's does make some excellent pies, their regular food is average.  I would eat somewhere else and then to Henry's for dessert!  Both of my visits to Tommy's Diner have been for breakfast, so I can't help you with the quality of their lunch.

You might want to give Phillips Coney Island near downtown Columbus a try. It's on Broad Street, a little east of Tommy's. They have terrific bean soup, and their coneys are really good.

Thanks for those suggestions. That should get me started. The thought of making it to Crabill's is extremely enticing to me, but I don't think my wife would be thrilled with driving 20 miles out of the way to eat at a place that serves nothing but sliders.

They have hot dogs and chili dogs also. Make a deal with her for something else along the way.

If you and your wife are ice cream fans, I highly recommend a stop at Jeni's.  Considering my reputation around here, this may shock some people, but I would take the ice cream at Jeni's over the pie at Henry's.

Hot dogs wouldn't improve the situation. I also just looked at the map and noticed that Crabill's is further west than I'm looking for.
We take a trip to the Midwest at least once every few years. I'll get there one day. In the mean time, I anticipate enjoying a couple excellent burgers while we're visiting friends in Indiana.

You may want to consider Schmidt's Sausage Haus in German Village.  Growing up in a German household, this is far from great German food.  But, a lot of people really like it and it does have fun atmosphere in an interesting neighborhood.  It is also very convenient to I-70.  Oh, and really good cream puffs, too!

Last time I was at Henry's it was a dirty ghost town. Schmidt's Autobahn is always worth a stop. Some Salty Carmel at Jeni's. Not going to Crabills is like going to Buffalo and not getting Beef on Weck. Dayton really has nothing to offer.

I won't argue with any of the Crabill's points, but the purpose of the trip is to visit my wife's friends and their new baby in southern Indiana. Given my wife's general lack of interest in roadfood, I'm happy with the extent to which she humors my obsession. And she's humoring me this time to the tune of a side trip to Kentucky for Lincoln's birth site, fried chicken and country ham (and if I'm lucky, chess pie) on the way home; not to mention a likely lunch or dinner at Gray Bros Cafeteria.

I have to confess I'm not much of a fan of German food, so Schmidt's isn't a real option for us. But I still really appreciate all of the suggestions.

Thanks. That looks promising if we decide to make a lunch stop. We're now also toying with the idea of eating a big mid morning breakfast in Pittsburgh at some place like Pamela's or one of the places in the Strip District before we head out on the road (we live in Philly, but are staying with friends in Pittsburgh the night before we move on to Indiana), then just stopping for pie at Henry's and going from there straight to Gray Bros. Cafeteria for a big dinner; and more pie.

But I do like the look of North market. We may have to make a pit stop there. From their site, it reminds me of the Reading Terminal Market, which I live only a couple blocks from.

There are a couple of really good stands in the North Market in addition to Jeni's (by the way I know it sounds lame with all of her concotions but my current favorite is The Milkiest Chocolate in the World).  I usually look first at the North Market Poultry and Game stand to see if they have any preparted food that day.  My second chocie is usually Hubert's Polish Kitchen.  If he has Bigos (Polish Hunter's Stew) get it.  There is also an interesting pizza stand named Clever Crow.  It is different crust then you will find most places.  It is a very dense sourdough cornmeal crust and there are usually some interesting toppings.

North Market is the BEST.  Went to Columbus for a convention this summer and wandered a few blocks from the convention center and there it was.  Hubert's Polish Kitchen is just great..completely great.  There was also a small stand there run by a couple of college kids selling interesting spices. My companion went all out on that.    It was definitely worth seeing.  Very, very nice market.
