Food identification needed

 

Can anyone tell me the identity of the food item sitting on top of the pickle?
 
Not paying attention, I bit in to it thinking it was an olive.  It was full of little seeds and pickled in a brine.  That thing on the left is it's stem.
 
It has lines on it like a football.
 
I've never seen one before.

I'm not sure I'd eat one again.  I'm not a fan of seeds.  Eating a dry fig is a challenge.
 
I would serve them, though.  Maybe in a cocktail.  I'll have to do some more investigating.
