Main Street Cafe, Durham, KS Wed, 06/6/12 5:34 PM (permalink)
We returned to Main Street Cafe, 517 Douglas Avenue, Durham, Kansas for lunch today.  It was as good, or better, than our visit last summer.  Today's lunch offerings were bierocks or 2 homemade sausages, mashed or baked potato, carrots or baked beans, and one trip salad bar for $7.25 with $.75 iced tea or coffee, and $1.59 soft drinks.  The homemade pies were all $2.25 per slice, except peach which was $1.75 per slice.  My mother-in-law's ham and cheese sandwich (with a large thick oversizes slice of ham) was $3.40 on a bun.

The Wedel's restaurant is open from 6:30am-2:30pm Monday-Saturday and from 5-8pm on Friday evenings.  This is a true road food experience - with quality road food.  The staff members and the owners are all members of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite.  Durham is 30 miles south of Abilene on K-15.

    Milt-
The fact that you mentioned pies caught my eye.  So I found this blog with some gorgeous pie photos from Main Street Cafe.  It looks like they even have sour cream raisin pie, which would be an oddity in Kansas.  Thanks so much for bringing this place to our attention!

I know you've been to The Breadbasket in Newton, how does Main Street Cafe compare?

Both are excellent places to eat.  I would heartily recommend either to those who are in the area.  Main Street Cafe has a simpler image - very small town.  Durham has a population of just over one hundred.  It is one of only three or four business in Durham.  The Breadbasket is more mainstream and is in a much larger community.  The menu at Main Street Cafe is much more limited than what is offered at The Breadbasket.  Our choice yesterday was because Durham was a thirty minute drive, while Newton is seventy-five minutes away.

Thank you for the link.  I was not aware of it - or of the blog (which I have now "liked" on Facebook).

Main Street Cafe is definitely on my "hit list" the next time I find myself in Kansas

Looking through the photos last night on the blog, I noticed the sign on the front door says "specializing in sausage".  Could you tell us more about the sausages you ate?  Homemade sausage followed by pie sounds like a great meal to me!

The sausages are around 5" long, as I recall.  My lunch serving was two sausages.  They were flavorful, but mild.  The meat had been very finely minced.
