Saturday lunch in Mazomanie

Or "Mazo", as it's known around here.  And no, JRPfeff, we did not visit the nude beach." />

Mazomanie's been around for over 150 years.

So naturally at one time a train went right through town.

That large brick building down the tracks looks interesting...

...so let's get a little closer.

Welcome to The Old Feed Mill.  We've had a number of good meals here and while it does have a slight tourist vibe we come for the food, which is served outside or in the spacious dining room.

We started our lunch with cups of beer-cheese soup and Creole clam chowder.

The former had a subtle beer flavor and pieces of sausage, and the latter was spicy, dark from a browned-flour roux, and loaded with chopped clams.

The complimentary bread is fittingly made with flour ground on the premises.

Some of the menu items can seem a bit upscale but OFM also serves up classics like pot roast and chicken pot pie.

The pot roast was fork-tender and came with garlic mashed potatoes (which have never disappointed me) and a vegetable medley, and the pot pie was cooked in a slightly unconventional fashion as the filling's exposed and topped with a pastry triangle.  We both liked the pot roast better and found the pot pie to be very mild, but in fairness it was up against the big flavors of beef, pan gravy, garlic, and glazed (balsamic, maybe?) vegetables.

After lunch the dessert tray came 'round and all I remember is that it contained an apple dumpling (bottom center) and key lime-glazed cheesecake (upper right), which I knew would be Mrs. SC's choice.

She chose to bring it home and after a couple of bites proclaimed it fantastic.  I took her word for it.

Even though The Old Feed Mill is almost 48 miles from home we don't mind making a couple of trips each year because the food has always been enjoyable.
