Dog Days of Summer Tour: The Contingent

It's been suggested that we plan a get-together in the coming weeks for locations that are best enjoyed in warm weather.

Some ideas:

Moody's Pub: A classic since 1959- great burgers, great beer garden- I was shocked, SHOCKED to find out some Contingent members haven't been there! " />

La Palapa: A Contingent favorite.  Camarones La Palapa and a giant, bloodthirsty shark on the roof- 'nuff said.

Mario's Italian Ice: I think in August is when the peach is in season.

Cunis Candies & Ice Cream: Great sundaes, peach ice cream, but located FAR south, and are closed on Sundays!

Other suggestions?  When do we want to go?  Given the geographical distance between all of these, it may be difficult to do all of them in one day, so let's decide which of these we want to go to and if there are other places we want to add in!

Mr. Maki and I are available any Saturday or Sunday in August EXCEPT the 11th or 12th, but that's because that weekend is Ginza Fest, a Japanese/Buddhist cultural festival in the Old Town neighborhood.  I highly recommend it for the food, the shows, the shopping and the exhibits.  The following weekend, the 16th-19th is Irish Fest in Milwaukee and I'm sure there will be a get-together at Fred's in Burlington.

The first three weekends in September (1st/2nd, 8th/9th and 15th/16th) are also good for us.

This looks great! I've never been to Moody's, and amazingly, due to various time conflicts with recent Contingent tours, I haven't yet made it to La Palapa and Cuni's. It's about time I go to these places.... My availability is similar to yours: the only weekend I know I cannot go is August 11/12.

ChiTownDiner and I were talking about similar plans last night at the other end of the table during the "Meet Ralph & Lori" dinner at Nancy's Pizza.  I was thinking about building a tour around a couple of places we've been wanting to visit for a while.

Some time ago, CTD recommended a southwest side shrimp house called Troha's, highly thought of over at LTH and elsewhere.  I had Cemitas Puebla in my back pocket as an alternate on the "Dining ala Trunk" tour last summer.  Both places could easily fit into the tour you're suggesting, although, it could be a little too much ( I know, no such thing).

Sorry no pictures of my suggestions, because I'm an old man who doesn't understand this new fangled technology stuff.

8/18 & 9/15-----I'm at Mayo the day before both those days. So I'll be there, but will be a sleepy_detective, not a stricken one.   Any other weekend works as far as I know.

Both places you described sound great, Buddy!

I know it's early to get into an actual schedule, but doing Mario's before LaPalapa worked out GREAT last time.

I'd be pushing for a September date, keeping in mind that Cheese Days in Monroe, WI is the weekend of 9/14-16.  Not so much the "Dog Days of Summer"; more like the (hopefully) "Pleasant Early Days of Fall".  Definitely a better climate for dining at Moody's beer garden.

Fall doesn't start until September 22nd, so we're good.  Buddy, do you have a preference for Saturday or Sunday?

Hey all. Definitely up for an August tour. As far as that month goes I'll be out of town the weekend of 8-4 & 8-5. I also have plans on 8-11 & 8-25. So Sundays other than the 5th would work probably best for me also.

Figuring that Labor Day weekend is already ruled out, here are the other days that wouldn't work for me/us: 8-4, 8-19, 8-25, 8-26, 9-30.

Sorry to shout, but because there's so many dates to choose from, please fill out this form on doodle.com!!!

    http://www.doodle.com/uw8xixkwk87z8hdt

Enter your name, click the "Show All 15 Options" button.  Click whether each day is a yes or no for you.  If a day is available for you, but not one you prefer, click the "(Yes)"- that means you're available "if need be".  Click "Save" and you're done.

I included Labor Day, but we'd have to make sure the places we choose will be open that day.

    Dates to consider:
August 11th and 12th- Ginza Fest
August 18th and 19th- Irish Fest (and probably Fred's on the 18th?)
    September 9th- LTH Picnic
September 15th and 16th- Cheese Days
    September 16th- Rosh Hashanah eve

I'd rather not go too far into September for this tour because we'd like to do stuff outdoors, and that gets dicey the later in the year you go.  Moody's indoors is pretty cool too- dark wood, dark EVERYTHING- one of those restaurants you need a flashlight in, and it has a big fireplace.  Very cozy, but I'd rather go sooner and sit outside, as long as it's not raining (if the rest of this summer is any indicator, that won't be a problem...famous last words.)

La Palapa indoors is fluorescent light hell, so I don't even bother going there in the colder months.

Oh, and Mario's closes around September 15th.

I wrote down all my busy days in my calendar at work, so I will have to check that tomorrow and get back to you on the doodle thing.
August is a very bad month, though...I think almost every weekend is taken (at least one day), and I know for sure the 25th/26th is out.
The 18th/19th might be possible, but that's Irish Fest, so I'm expecting lunch in the newly-remodeled Fred's with everyone.
I'll let y'all know as soon as I can.

I won't know until Tue or Wed about my late August and September dates.  I'll fill out the doodle thing as soon as that's ironed out.  I sure hope I can do the Fred's thing with everyone, I've had to miss it every year so far.  This sounds like a great tour.

So, it looks like either Saturday, September 1st or Saturday, September 8th.  CTD is refraining from giving his availability because his schedule is so hectic.  Hopefully whatever day we choose will work for him.

The 1st works for everyone except JRP and PieDiva.  The 8th works for everyone except Iris.

Last minute people- does one of those dates work better than the other?

September 1 falls on Labor Day weekend, if that's an issue for anyone. Perhaps a place or two on the itinerary will be closed then.

Either date, the 1st or the 8th, is good for the Roadhouses as long as we nail it down soon so I can mark my availability on the calendar at Burt's.

    Moody's...La Palapa...Mario's...Cemitas Puebla...

S_D, did you want to go anywhere with a pepper & egg sandwich, or that place specifically?

I'm good with Moody's. Ate a lot of their burgers in the mid late 60's on dates. How about Edzo's in Evanston? We could stay north and do a burger run. Poochie's, wiener & Still Champion, that little shack on Asbury, north of Howard-Bill's? Gold Coin, Pickle Barrel?

These are good choices to work with. If the Milwaukee part of the Contingent gets to Chicago early enough, we can start off at Freddy's in Cicero at 10 am, then raid La Palapa at around 11:30, then Mario's at 1:30 or 2:00 pm, then Cemitas at 3:00 or 3:30, then Moody's at 5:00 or 6:00 for dinner. Maybe dessert at Wiener and Still.... Okay, maybe that's a bit ambitious. Or we could go north to south, kicking off at Moody's and ending up at Mario's for Italian Ice and/or Freddy's for gelato.

Ooo, Edzo's, CSD....you may be onto something there.  I'm not sure about doing an entire day of burgers, but at least Edzo's and Moody's sounds like a good idea.

Edzo's is open until 4, so I think we should start the tour north and move south.
I'm not sure I'm going to make it until September 1st...

What time does Edzo's open and start serving burgers? If some of us get to Evanston a bit early, I remember there are some interesting bakeries around the area. Any recs for a place for a tasty breakfast pastry (or pie) and coffee?
