23rd Annual World Chicken Festival Kicks Off In London Kentucky

The chicken party just got started tonight in London Kentucky. It runs from September 27th-30th 2012. Perhaps the most notable thing about the festival is the big skillet they use to cook the chicken in.
 
It holds 300 gallons of grease so it's a big one. Cooks use giant paddles to fry 1200 pieces of chicken at a time. My dad and I went to the party in the late 90s and it's a good slice of small town Americana. Of course Burger Boy, just down the road from the festival will actually sell you a better plate of chicken but residents aren't likely to mention that.
 
Colonel Sanders began his empire building in nearby Corbin so the festival's a good gimmick for a town sorely lacking in magnets to draw in the tourists.
