I don't think we've had this topic directly related to restaurants. It's one to think about before turning your keys over to a valet and who's ultimately responsible it. Back in July, I got a call from friends that I haven't heard from in a while who were dining nearby. Apparently, their car was parked by a valet impoperly and towed while they were dining. I gave them a lift to the towing yard which ended up having to wait for their car to arrive before they paid the fees and the vehicle released. I still don't know what the outcome was. From what I gather, everyone is blaming everyone else. The city rents out off-street parking spaces to valet services in this case and the restaurant and valet services are blaming the city's towing agent which claims it was parked in a space not designated for their use. Back in the 90's, some friends of my parents came down here on vacation and had a rental car that was damaged by a valet flying though speed bumps in a parking garage. I also recall a co-worker that discovered that she had an outstanding parking violation that the date and time corresponded with an evening out at a restaurant. The vehicle was returned without the citation. Every so often, one of the tv news crews does a story on some of the shennanagins that are pulled by towing companies and properties that lease out their parking lots after hours leaving patrons booted, towed, or finding their cars impounded in the lot with a closed gate or chains with tow folks charging big bucks for their release. Those story's are common, but valet related ones don't seem to make much press, but everyone seems to have a story or know of one. They usually end up with a lot of finger pointing and not even worth seeking legal remedy.

A valet left me a nice little note and his phone number....under the passenger side visor. I did not find it. I don't know what it said...because it was thrown out the window. I was presumed innocent. I am.

I can count on one hand the number of places around here that offer valet parking, and three of them are hotels. Now that I think about it, the only time I have ever used a valet for parking was when I was at a hotel in downtown Chicago, where we were simply not allowed to park our own car. I'm sure things like that do happen, but around here it just isn't common to even offer valet parking, much less hear about issues with it. Of course, almost everywhere has its own parking lot, or is next to one of the ramps which are run either by the city or a private company...none of the private businesses rent out their spaces after hours because they don't need to.

My niece left her brand new Mini with a valet.  When she returned there was a dent in the door.

She complained to the valet manager.  The manager asked the person who parked it.  That person said he didn't hit anything.

Lucky for my niece everything was videoed.

My valet parked her car, hit it while trying to park.  Got out of the car to check what he had hit and got back in to the car.

The  Valet paid for the repair.

Another friend parked her car at a valet and while she was dining, her house was robbed, using her front door key to enter the house.

The neighbors saw someone not my friend drive up and enter her house.  JAIL TIME!

This past June a man posed as a valet at the Seelbach Hilton in louisville, He helped bring their luggage in and drove off in their SUV.

We always use the valet at the Horseshoe casino its FREE and FAST, not much value in a 2002 Honda Civic.

In NJ that Honda Civic would have tinted windows a racing stripe...and $2000 rims by the time you finished a roll of quarters.

In 1974 I had a 1973 365 GTB Daytona Ferrari convertible, I let a valet park it at the Marina del Rey hotel, he rammed it into the back of a car parked in front of mine, I almost killed him, I was so P O. Then I had a ridiculously hard time collecting damages from the hotel!

Is it tacky to ride bikes to a Hotel?

I don't get why that would be tacky...people ride bikes all the time, to everywhere.

The same applies for garage door openers, which are usually forgotten about because they're out of sight and out of mind.

I heard of valet's in Chicago stealing toll road transponders (I-Pass) and putting dummies in their place.  Not only do you end up paying for someone else's tolls, but you get ticketed for blowing by toll plazas without paying.

BMWs come with valet keys. Valet keys come with BMWs really. Can't open the glove compartment or trunk. Door & ignition only.

If house keys are kept with the car keys & the key to the glove compartment is the same key or on the same ring...there's the address on the insurance & registration paperwork.

Never thought of something until now thanks to CC mentioning this. Most valet parking in this area is done off-site on contracted office parking lots or municipal off-street parking redesignated for the evening nearby. Either way, your vehicle is often being parked quite some distance from the valet area in an unsecure location. If you do use your valet key and it's like ours with no alarm or lock controls, you're depending on the valet to lock your vehicle and no alarm is engaged wherever he leaves the vehicle. Our vehicle lets you program several door lock states on ignition key position as probably do most. I guess you have to hope the valet is smart enough to check the door locks before leaving.

It irks me no end to have to pay to park to eat at a restaurant with a huge parking lot.  Self parking should be offered.  They're already getting your money for the meal.
