Beano Cook Dead at 81

Longtime college football color man Beano Cook died yesterday at age 81. He was the Sports Information Director at Pitt in the 60s and a very enjoyable guy to watch on TV. My best memory of him was his prognostication of the Maryland v. Penn St game back in the 80s, when the Terps could never beat the Nittany Lions: ".... and Penn St. will beat Maryland, because they always do." In Pace Requiescat Beano Cook. http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/sports/pitt-big-east/pitt-legend-beano-cook-dies-657150/

I don't think anyone could have loved college football more than Beano Cook. His loss is a sad thing.

Yeah, I took the news of this hard. Beano has long been a real favorite of mine. And it wasn't just because he was a local. Like Michael said previously, he loved college football and was maybe America's foremost historian on the subject. He was a fabulous storyteller and was also famous for his one liners. It is a real sad day here in Pittsburgh.

I kind of hope that ESPN runs a retrospective of his work tonight on SportsCenter or Saturday on their college football show (probably more likely). I loved listening to his segments on ESPNRadio - especially when he would be on air late night - even on the overnight shows. He was a hoot.

He could remember details of almost every game of importance that ever happened. "The Cardinal of College Football" was a great historian of the game. I liked to listen to him tell his stories on the radio. RIP Beano!
