Ann

I have been away for quite some time and I just read this thread.

I will light a candle tonight for you and for Bob.  I know he has struggled with his health, you both will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Best wishes Ann & Bob.  My father passed away last week so I have been in a prayerful mood and will pray for your recovery.

Here is the new one........Bob had further tests yesterday for his lungs.okay, we got this. Until he gets "community care" from a local hospital, they will not test for what might really be ailing him. I have called 5 times, left a messege, and no one has called back. What a crock, and what a fu***ing system. Meanwhile, he feels horrible.

Do you need to go down somewhere and "stand on someone's desk"?.  I find that endless emails and phone calls seem to get straightened when I my sometimes frustrated face is within inches of someone's nose

I had to have community care in July. It took forever and it took calling my doctor again and getting her on the stick. At first they were all over me like glue and I was having nurse visits and at home physical therapy several times a week. Mid way through, I had to have a semi emergency D&C. Four days later the physical therapist came and I said "I can't do this, I hurt!" I was bloated, in pain, my BP was way up and the therapist thought I was having a heart attack. She wanted me to go to the ER ASAP but she wasn't "allowed" to assist me in any way. I had to call someone who had to leave work and drive me to the ER. Turns out, I simply hadn't recovered from the D&C yet and this lady was wanting me to do leg lifts and stretches for physical therapy. The ER basically said too much too soon. That was in August. I haven't heard a peep from community care since. They are useless. Sorry that you have to use them to continue Bob's care.

I'm really sorry to hear this, Ann (and bummed for you too, K).  Just out of curiosity and because I don't know how these things work, is it possible that maybe Bob could get in at UW here in Madison because it's a teaching hospital?

Our system isn't perfect but when I hear stories like this I'm glad to have it. 4 kidney stones in 2 years and working on number 5.
1 to 3 days to see my family doctor, 2 to 4 weeks to see a specialist, a lot quicker if it's urgent. In that time I was admitted to the hospital 3 times, I think I will be admitted again soon just waiting for a CT scan on Wed. No private insurance, my cost ZERO.
I pay on my taxes just like every other Canadian but if you and your family and your employees don't have your health you don't have anything. Obama and Clinton want you to have this, maybe you should let them. Call me a socialist if you want. It just means I believe in an overall strong society. Health, education and freedom in that order.

Fried-I WILL stand on someones desk if necessary-I will......
Brad-am working on ANYTHING that will get Bob his tests. We are in a crappy age group-no kids, and too young to be seniors. Yet we paid into this system all of our lives..
Ice-Thanks, but Obamacare will not be free, and will not be in place for at least 4 more years.
Long story short, its almost too much to deal with. But I will sludge through the process, and get what he needs-even if it kills me........and it IS wearing me down, alot. We have earned the right to get help, although it seems to me, as we supported lots of people while paying taxes, we get none. I am pretty pissed.

I know nothings free but health care is the most important thing to us as far as I'm concerned no one should be turned away when in need.
Good luck I hope your troubles will soon be over.

So glad to hear Bob's lungs are OK. So sorry to hear how hard it has been for you to find out what is wrong. My thoughts are with you! I just reread your message and realized you didn't say his lungs were OK. Did they give you any results of the test?

I'm completely unfamiliar with community care, which seems weird given how many medical issues I've had the last few years and my spotty insurance coverage. But I would definitely raise some heck about getting the tests done that he needs! From what I'm reading, community care is for people who don't have insurance and not much money? Forgive me for not understanding, but all I can find online is for something called Community Care through various individual hospitals, and I don't quite get it.

Anyway, if it's money, are they willing to work out a payment plan so he can get the tests done? I find it reprehensible that while hospitals are not allowed to turn away people in an emergency, they can ignore you until it is one.

I had been in the ER  and was told I need physical therapy but I can't drive so Community Care came to me. I had a nurse come and do a physical exam even though I see my own MD regularly. Then I had a case worker who saw me twice and finally a physical therapist who came 3 times a week. All these people report to the hospital where I had been in ER, I did not initiate it. All of it was covered by Medicare (I'm 66). I had Community Care for something similar 3 years ago when I was hospitalized for 3 days. Again, it was initiated by the hospital.

Ah, gotcha. That makes it a little clearer for me, thanks! Not something I would have been offered in any case, since they don't much care if I can get around or not, they just tell me what I need to have done and it's just my sorry luck if I can't make it happen.

Best of luck to you and Bob, Ann! I hope you are able to figure out what's wrong so you can go about getting it fixed soon!

Felix-exactly-no insurance and not much income. That is us. And Kland, we are 52 and 53......they dont come to us unless Bob was was hospitilzed...its a cluster fu**, and I am tired of it. We cant drive either-no car. Its just a pain, and if we were younger, older, or a minority, we would be helped sooner. Its a fact, people, not a statement of prejudice.

I am really sorry that things are going this way Ann.  I've worked for a major academic medical center for the last 13 years and I still have trouble understanding all of the ins and outs of our healthcare "system."  It is so confusing to navigate and many decisions are driven by payers.  Hospitals have tough decisions to make and they don't always use the right logic to do so.  I have found that the "squeaky wheel" really applies so don't be afraid to keep asking until you get the tests you need.  And don't be afraid to go to the ER for at the slightest chance of a problem.  It's messed up but it works.  And as someone suggested above, you might be better off going to a larger hospital like UW than a community hospital.  I knwo our attitude here is that we take anyone from anywhere but someof the smaller community hospitals don't act that way.

Keep your head up and keep fighting.
