Top 5 Barbecue Beef Chuck Rib Joints In The State Of Texas Mon, 02/11/13 2:04 PM (permalink)
To many people the grand champion of Texas Barbecue is the beef chuck rib. It's also a vanishing menu items as many people are loathe to pay between 15-20 dollars for a single rib no matter how much meat is clinging to it.
Man Up Texas BBQ released their Top 5 Barbecue Beef Chuck Rib Joints In The State Of Texas this morning and it's disappointingly brief. Only 5 restaurants made the list. 20 years ago we would've had, at minimum, a dozen.
Here's the list. Man Up does their polls alphabetically so be aware this is not in order of importance:
Winner: Louie Mueller
Black's, Iron Works, JMueller, Opie's
Black's Barbecue down in Lockhart plundered our beef rib cherry over 20 years ago and we remain haunted by that fateful night. They're without question the finest barbecue joint in "the barbecue capital of Texas" and if people make claims to the contrary just go ahead and knock the Hell out of 'em. Black's runs em up all up a tree when it comes to smoked meat.
JMueller has been consigned to the roll call of Texas greats that have passed from the scene. But a rebirth is in the works. New name: John Mueller Meat Company. Many epiphanies have been written on the wiry pit boss's mammoth beef ribs.
Mystified by the absence of Stiles Switch. They put out an incredible beef rib.

Those ribs look awesome. I like beef ribs more than pork ribs, but I don't know of a single place in my area that makes them. Don't even see any in the stores. Completely overlooked in this part of the country, IMHO.

So where would one go to purchase ribs such as these. I have never seen them at HEB or Randal's, not even at that meat market in Taylor.

Louie Muller BBQ in Taylor has always been my favorite BBQ. Especially for their huge, smokey, crusty, and tasty beef ribs! I'm happy they took first place.

The next time I'm down Lockhart way, I'm gonna skip Smitty's and go to Black's!

I can never decide which I like best so on my way down to Port A I stop at Black's and on my way back I stop at Smitty's.

John Mueller, who authors the finest beef ribs in Travis County should be back up and running next week in East Austin

I found big packs of Chuck Ribs at Restaurant Depot.
Headed back to Texas this Tuesday and have a couple of beef ribs on the agenda.  Probably Louie Muellers and LA BBQ.  I am hoping to be there for the opening of John Mueller Meat Co on the 20th if that is still the grand opening date.

scrumptiouschef , thanks for this thread!  Beef ribs are one Texas delicacy I have yet to sample.  It's now on my "must" list.

Personally, I've never been to Opie's although, I've heard good things about it.
I have been to Ironworks however and found it underwhelming.

Twinwillow...if you had to pick one place in Dallas to hit on my way to the Austin area what would it be.  I usually do Lockhart Smokehouse and Pecan Lodge will be closed (coming down on a Tuesday but will get it on my way back on Thursday or Friday).  Is there a must hit place that I am missing?
