Question about my truck build and generator placement Fri, 03/8/13 5:24 PM (permalink)
[Helpful answer received] / [List Solutions Only]
I had a thought and was wondering if this would be possible. I have a 270lb Onan Marquis 7000 and I was looking under the stairs around the wheel well of my Chevy 1998 p30 18ft step van and had the idea of mounting the generator under there to save space.  Do you think it's possible and will it hold all that weight?

I'm not exactly sure of what area your talking about. Stairs...do you mean the steps coming into the front drivers area? If so you have exhaust manifolds and the transmission in that area. I'd doubt that, that would be a good area for a generator. I'd look at the drivers side just behind the drivers seat or for that mater anywhere else on that side of your SV.  You don't want it close to your service window if you can help it.

Ok so you think behind the driver side is better? Also do you think the onan will hold under the truck? I man I see these onan kits for floor mounting but it looks so flimsy, do you know of another ya of mounting it under the truck with it being more sturdy? Thanks

Any good fabricator could build a frame to allow almost anything no mater what the weight using the truck frame and some structural support.

I'd strongly suggest a great deal of research here and online as well. There is the original framing, roll-out drawer for service, gas supply propane/gasoline, vibration/noise from both the operation and exhaust, cooling of the generator, and supply lines to electrical power box to be considered. Most of these issues have been discussed here but there are some great articles about how to quiet a generator and other issues on line. Not a quick fix "oh just stick it here" type weekend project.

I have built gen boxes on roofs and mounted them up there, built hanging frames off the frame of the truck and mounted them there, but I gotta say the easiest way is to drop the sucker on the floor somewhere in the truck, cut a hole in the wall, frame the hole, use the existing panel I just cut out and put a vent on it, turn it into the hatch. Build a box around the generator on the inside, done.

I'll try and get some more pictures posted.  It basically an angle iron frame attached to the truck frame, the floor, and the outside with 500lb drawer slides.  Over sized the hole so a Honda 6500 would fit if I need to replace the Kipor 6000 in the future.  I decided to cutout the floor so the body side support would not be cut.  It will make the access door installation cleaner but it did add extra labor to build the frame verses installing on the floor.

I don't have enough room in my rig for this, but I am impressed and excited to see it when it's finished

I put mine behind the drivers seat and built the sinks around it to help take up the extra space.  I would have loved to put the beast like Belcibo did but just couldn't manage getting a welder to build something strong enough for the 600# genny.  I'm happy with it as it worked out pretty well.

It sure doens't...it stays in place and lives there forever, and ever, amen.  I think if I ever had any issues I would just cut a big hole in the side of the truck!!!!

Most generator manufacturers recommend against that. I believe is is something about scavenging and exhaust infiltration while the genset isn't running.

Correct, don't combine exhaust systems, also make sure you take into account the location of the exhaust to avoid any possibility of re-entry into the work space.

No I sure did not.  I ran it along side the truck's exhaust but it is completely separate.  Like the others said its a pretty bad idea to combine the two so you should definitely keep them separate.  I did run the fuel from the same tank though...some peeps thought it best to not tap into the factory fuel lines but I did (at the tank) and also have the return line tapped (again, at the tank) and haven't had any issues with starvation while both engines are running...

I need to run my exhaust different. What did you do?just weld a longer exhaust pipe onto the short one coming off of the generator? I don't need it to go far. I have my genny mounted on the front which is great except the exhaust goes into the engine compartment and then into the truck which is no good.

I honestly went the cheapo way and have a collection of auto part store exhaust pieces getting the job done.  Some 2" elbows, clamps, hangers, 2" pipe, muffler.  Just figured out where I wanted everything to go and drew out what I would need.  You could easily take it to a muffler shop and have them weld and hang the pipes (or even just bend and weld what you needed).  That would be the cleanest, neatest way I'm sure...

Alright. I need to do something for sure. The muffler end on my Duromax 10000 watt is pretty small
