Smoked Woodchuck Sun, 04/7/13 6:26 PM (permalink)
Pig Park BBQ, a small, eat in your car, roadside place on Rt 9 in Ware Mass was closed when I passed today, but a sign was advertising smoked woodchuck for one day later this month. I have stopped, but never eaten there. The line moves waaaay to slow for my usual time situation, plus they are often closed. Maybe one day, but no woodchuck for me.

You just cannot eat the best weather forecaster in PA!  He predicted an early spring and it has been in the 30s and 40s up until today.  Well, he was close.  Oh what the hell, smoke and eat the critter.  Maybe Punxsutawney should use a gerbil.

I won't touch it unless I see Andrew Zimmern taste it and smile, and then proclaim and describe how amazingly good it tastes!

How much wood would a woodchuck need if a woodchuck was smoked with wood?

Smoked woodchuck, or Whistlepig, is really good. I love it pulled like pork. Baked chuck is excellent tablefare, too, as is fried chuck.

For some reason whistle pigs choose to reside under my dock.  It is concerning because they tunnel and could weaken the structure.  I called the folks who trap them and they have caught them for several consecutive years.  They always take them to a wildlife area and release them although one of them died while in the cage?  Why, I do not know because I gave them water and food.  Maybe a heart attack?

I never ate one but I have a friend who smoked a beaver  Really and no joke.  He claimed it was very good

Beaver is excellent fare. Here in Ohio it is illegal to release a woodchuck alive. The same holds true for raccoons. It has to do with distemper and rabies.

Yes, and of course "minerally and like where he lives".

I grew up in Punxsutawney and let me tell you we LOVE our Punxsutawney Phil & his wife Phyllis!  Maybe you can try it on one of his cousins!

Eaten it once. Maybe we didn't prepare it right, but it sure was tough.
                        Alcohol may have been involved
