One of the best known and well-loved bakeries in San Francisco is Tartine in the Mission District, which I visited yesterday.
It's VERY hard to make choices among the beautiful cakes, tarts, breakfast pastries, and puddings.  Here's what I couldn't resist yesterday:
Pecan tart with rum and kumquats:

Apple and huckleberry bread pudding (great warmed up the next morning for breakfast):

And one of the most fabulous banana cream tarts ever:

This cafe is sooo worth making the effort to get to.  It's a few blocks from the 16th Street BART subway stop, which is a plus in SF!
