Meyer lemon-vanilla bean marmalade

Since Meyer lemons are so prevalent in California, I consider dishes with them to be regional.  My dwarf Meyer lemon tree is so prolific, I still have lemons on it well after the typical season ended in March.  One of my favorite recipes to make is Meyer lemon-vanilla bean marmalade, which I found on Epicurious.  It's delicious!

    WOW!  So how do I tell if one of my lemon trees is a Meyer Lemon?
     
    I've never attempted anything that needs to be canned or kept in a jar.
     
    That really looks great. 
     
    (But that vanilla bean scares me in a Nessy sort of way!)

    IF I'm not mistaken Meyer lemon trees are of the Dwarf variety and not full sized like the one I have!  I think the ones you have where you live are just plain lemon trees!?

    There's actually a full-size and a dwarf-size Meyer lemon tree.  Mine's the dwarf version, and so far, I can easily reach all the fruit!
     
    Mar - try scratching the rind a little bit and sniff it.  Meyers will smell a bit more floral (to me, anyway) than regular lemons--not as "sharp."  Another clue is when you cut into a Meyer, the inside will have a little more orange color to it than a regular lemon.  Anyone else have ways of telling which is which (besides taste, of course)?
     
    Vanilla beans are easy, and boy--do they have great flavor! I buy mine online from Beanilla.
     
    FYI, I didn't can this marmalade--just put it into jars and giving most of it away.  According to the recipe it'll be good for two weeks, so I put a "use by" date on the label.  It's probably safe longer than that, because of the amount of sugar and acid, but I'm no expert and wouldn't want anyone to have an issue.

    Just 2 weeks?  That doesn't seem fair!
     
    If you put paraffin on the top maybe it would have a shelf life.
     
    When I was a kid my mother made apricot and plum jam. 
     
    Somehow a pot of hot paraffin ended up on my foot.  Somehow there are no scars except maybe mentally.

    OWWWWWW!!!  Mar, that sounds awful. 
     
    Maybe some of the canners on RF can answer some questions about this.  I took a half-day class in canning, but we spent more time on prepping the food than on the process, and I didn't get decent instructions to bring home, either.  Pretty sad... 
     
    I took some marmalade to the fire station in my neighborhood.

    ahh yes the old method of canning with parafin wax.  Many a burned finger and hands around the house those weeks.
     
    although now the parafin wax treatment for arthritis feels good, compared to the horrid memories of scalding hot wax.

    Look at your lemons do they have a very pronounced blossom knob on them, if so they are regular lemons.  Meyer Lemons are a cross between mandarin orange and lemon, so they are sweeter and less acidic.
     
    Meyer lemons are more rounded and dont have such a pronounced blossom end as the regular ones do.

    Thanks, Donald.  I don't think I have Meyer Lemons.  I have big, oddly shaped mutated lemons that are sour and perfect for recipes needing lemon juice.
     
    One tree has the large variety and the other looks more lemon shaped.  I'll have to go out and check them out now.

    pnw - it's definitely sweet with some bitter--not at all tart.  I used a Tahitian vanilla bean, so definitely more floral, too.
     
    mar - if you'd seen the cutie who answered the door at the firehouse, you'd question my motives...
