 Gas or Diesel food truck??

hello all.
 
I am going to be adding a food truck to my restaurant and need some advise. Gas or Diesel?  If I go with diesel I was going with a 10k gen and was told if I go with gas need to put 2 7000w gens. The truck is not going to have any stoves/fryers/hood/etc. Just sandwich coolers/fridge.

    Diesel tends to be more expensive in all aspects, purchase, repair and fuel PRICE. But they also tend to be more efficient and require less repair/upkeep than a gas engine, but will cost more when it is needed. I have an Onan QD12000 diesel genset in my truck and I love it, quiet, efficient and plenty of power.
     
    Cliff notes, gas is cheaper but will have more downtime, and use more fuel. Diesel more initial expense, marginally less expensive in service.

      Why would you need 14k gas vs 10k diesel? Fuel for the power source makes no difference. Watts is watts.
      What are you going to run besides a couple of refers? 10k runs a lot of stuff.

        I have the same Onan QD 12 kw.... NEVER wished I had gotten something else!

          I'd go diesel...sure the fuel is a little but they're built for longevity and made to run...plus the efficiency makes up for the extra little bit of fuel.  I can still get about 12 mpg with my diesel food truck, fully loaded.  Gas-not so much...

            I didn't have a choice..I bought what I could afford and got a great deal on a 93 P30 diesel with 88,000 miles for $2000.00. Very good deal I think. I am just starting my build.

              I was told if I do not run a 10k diesel I would run 2 7000k gas. I do not know the reasoning as I will find out tomorrow. 
               
              Equip:
               
              2 sandwich coolers
              1 fridge
              1 microwave
              1 Panini Press
              A/C
              Lights, POS system, Stereo
              1 Countertop Warming Table (possibly)

                I see a lean towards diesel. I have 2 different ones I am looking at one diesel and one gas....What is the usual mileage that the diesels need to be rebuilt at when properly maintained? A vast majority of the ones I am finding have over 160k+ which I know isn't much for them but when should I expect replacement. I've also heard complaints about smell from the gens, should I run a stack? Thanks everyone for your help.

                  Also a friend of mine found me 2 trucks:
                   
                  97 w/5.9 cummins with 250k miles for 8k OR
                  99 w/GM powertrain 168k miles for 5500

                    I went with a 95 gm diesel with over 220k miles on it and its running strong (knock on wood). I'm sure the 99 you're looking at is a 6.5 diesel probably turbo. Solid performer. The 5.9 is a stud. That's what most of the FedEx trucks use and they're engines are sold used on eBay with 400k miles and are still ticking. Either way you're probably folded. Drive them and see how they drive, shift, downshift, handle hills, etc. that will tell you more than our preferences. I'm not far from you let me know if you have any ther questions. Not that I would be of too much help but ya never know!

                          The one I am looking at was fleet maintained. I am speaking with the company who did the maintenance on this truck and see if he could look it over for me. That was one of the reasons I wanted to go with diesel, workhorses....

                            Man I'm all over the place...we just did two in Stuart then Port St. Lucie and will be in Miami tomorrow.  There's a lot going on but we prefer to stay around Broward...much easier on fuel tank!  What's your game plan?  For a while I was thinking we could make it on events (as some of them are big money makers) but we're back to looking for something concrete and consistent for most days.

                              If you go with a diesel , you can purchase Fuel Additives which make your exhaust smell like Groovy Grape, Pina Colada, Bubble Gum, and Water Melon just to name a few, I used these flavor on my Nitro powered R/C boat , it stopped my eyes from burning.   Speedwaymotors . com Look up  Manhattan oil.

                                @fishscale28 We are probably going to be doing the nightly events and daytime gig also. Haven't really hit the part full on yet. I am having the most difficult time finding people to build this truck. I finally found and bought a truck and I'm at the point where I might build it myself. I am getting quotes on installing the generator outside and rough plumbing. Then I can handle the rest... The quotes I've gotten are ridiculous.

                                  Yeah if you can find a way to build it yourself you'll save a ton.  Even the plumbing is easy once you get everything in place and figure out how you want to run everything.  I built my truck mostly from seeing things on this site or seeing other trucks.  If I had to do it again (which I don't know if I ever would) I would do lots of things differently but all in all it worked out ok

                                      Seal everything on the floor corners (into the wall) very, very well so you can hose everything out.  Put all your equipment on a solid base so there isn't any hard to reach spots underneath all your equipement...will keep things from rolling/hiding under there.  Get plenty of locking/securable storage for everything.  Everything moves so the better its secured the better off you'll be.  Use good latches on the awnings and you might like aluminum windows instead of anything you find at Lowes or HD (although they might have to order them).  Of course you can buy the ones already made for this application with the awning but they're expensive as can be.  If you're going to be doing most of the prep on the truck don't skimp on refrigeration.  I have a 48" and a 60" and would love to get another cooler....a stand up even.  Also be sure you have a great floor.  I went with a commercial vinyl garage covering.  I went with a split AC unit and am happy I did.  Down here you'll want at least two roof top AC's but be sure you have a makeup air system in place otherwise your hood will suck it all out.  I'm sure I'll have more as I remember it.  Cheers!
