Diners on Good Morning America Tue, 03/30/04 5:04 PM (permalink)
ABC's "Good Morning America" is doing a 3-part story about diners next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. (4/5-6-7). I don't know what it's going to be exactly, but I do know that I'll be a talking head in it. They interviewed me today at O'Rourke's http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=118 (where the day's specials included pine bark stew!)

Does this mean I have to get up EARLY to watch TV? Ok, for Michael Stern I will do it. What is pine bark stew?

Pine Bark Stew is a Southern fish soup made with fatback and freshwater fish. I think it's supposed to have gotten its name because Native Americans cooked it over pine bark fires...

If you're up, let me know how I am on GMA! I can't watch TV at that time: I don't like to start the day all annoyed, which is usually what happens when I watch TV.

I don't even speak before 9AM much less watch TV. That doesn't come on until the 10PM news. But for Fearless Leader I will make the effort to get up and turn on GMA. Will report on this later.....[|)][|)]

Lucky you're on GMA, Michael. There's so much in-fighting at Today I can't watch it without cringing.
          Pine Bark Stew sounds tasty.

lleechef: Talk about getting up early. I was up this morning at 3, got to work at 4am for an event we were having, discovered too late that we ran completely out of pastries and bagels, and had to zoom across town to Dunkin' Donuts to order 60 dozen donuts on a corporate Visa.

The look on the poor counter girl's face when I came to pick up 60 dozen donuts was one of, "It's too early for this." It was way too early for all of us at that point....

What does this have to do with "GMA"? Nothing...but now I'm a pro at handling adverse situations before the sun comes up!

That's craziness! Nobody should be up before the sun! (In Dec. here that means 11AM or so!) But since the sun is up now at 6AM I have no choice but to watch GMA next week.

                    Are we not men?

I once said that anyone who willingly gets up before the sun on a regular basis is also capable of cannibalism. Back to thread, I don't know how many times I have passed O'Rourke's when it was either closed or only serving brunch. With great sadness and longing, I must say that I have never had their famous steamed cheeseburger.

I was going to say something very close to that. I just love my Tivo.

Tivo in the simpliest form is a system that let's you record TV to a hard drive. It has a 12.95 a month service charge or a $299 lifetime of the unit service charge. But for that you get a TV guide that is good for 14 to 21 days at a time. You can: Select what to record and when. Set up wish lists. Search for upcoming shows and select to record them. Pause live TV and then resume. With a minor hack do a 30 second commercial skip on recorded shows. Rewind shows. Set up a show to be recorded when ever it comes on. And more.

I have the DirectTV version that is a satellite descrambler and Tivo in one. It is the best thing to happen to TV since sliced bread.

Our tv comes on for 1) evening news 2) FOOTBALL!! 3) Emeril occasionally in the winter 4) Michael Stern ahem, not necessarily in THAT order.
All other programming is totally foreign to us. Hell, I'm trying to catch up (ketchup?) on old Seinfeld and All in the Family episodes I missed while working nights for 25 years!!!!
I'd still rather be out on the boat.....fishing!

The last time I saw Jane & Michael was on Fox & Friends (I think) back in January. It was some chili special. I've slept since then, but as I recall:

Jane was stuck out in the cold, on the street, being asked some lame questions by Steve Dusie (sp??). Michael was in the warm kitchen with E.D. Hill.

Guess we know who has the better agent.

Jane was stuck out in the cold, on the street, being asked some lame questions by Steve Dusie (sp??). Michael was in the warm kitchen with E.D. Hill.

I don't know what it's going to be exactly, but I do know that I'll be a talking head in it. They interviewed me today atO'Rourke's (where the day's specials included pine bark stew!)

You should have had the GMA people bring up a case of Sugar Wafers for ya!

The Sugar Wafer itch has temporarily subsided, as I recently got a half-gallon jug full of chocolate-covered peanuts. Should last a day or two. And I hear one of the supermarkets in my county now has Sugar Wafers. I wonder if I should take this forced cold-turkey time as an omen to finally beat Sugar Wafers' rule over me...

Pine Bark Stew is so-named, according to one tradition, because it was originally served in curved pieces of pine bark. I don't see how it stayed put long enough to eat it, but that's what "they" say. It's a fairly simple, thick, freshwater fish stew with a base of bacon (usually) or salt pork (sometimes). There is (or was) a good recipe in the cookbook that the Junior League of Charleston (SC) puts out.

                                              DIRECTV rules.

(I run their analytic database, so I'm a little biased.)

We also have DIRECTV satellite and internet. They are coooool.

And poo-poo, after all that, the D-rays lost...
