PIE, OH MY, OH MY!!

Well I have landed here in the mid south and I have got settled in, I will be house sitting for a weeks here in Middle Tennessee so I thought what better way to torture my good friend Buffetbuster than to create a "trip report" of ALL the pie I am going to enjoy over the next few weeks.

So to start off the adventure:

Sunset Family Restaurant in Lebanon, TN

Grandma's Chocolate Pie

Buttemilk Pie

And No it's not techincally pie, but will drive Cliff nuts anyway
Bananananana Puddin

MUCH MORE TO COME - ( I have 30+ pie stops planned over the next few weeks)

it was the real deal, no intant pudding mix there, the chocolate had the slight grittiness of the cornstarch thickener, but a nice even chocolate taste and the meringue was light and fresh and not watery.

The crusts were nice and short and flaky

Off to meet Poverty Pete for lunch at The Pharmacy for burgers, phosphates and or shakes too.

and maybe a pie stop or two....   BWA HA HA HA

BB:  We just had this pie show open up in Knoxville in historic Bearden where I went to high school.  A trendy neighborhood.  I have not tried them but apparently, they are getting good reviews.

A fabulous website for sure. Looks like a lot of pride and passion going on with the new endeavor. Nice that they have different sizes of pies and stick to just  a few varieties. I would dearly love to try their buttermilk pie. Now, get a move on over there and let us know!

I already started torturing bb the other day when I told him I had discovered a place called "Just Pies".  It was Sunday late afternoon and they were closed.  So I stopped by yesterday and got a banana cream for MH and a caramel apple pecan for me.  With all the hoopla of the WS last night I forgot to sample mine.  MH did not forget and pronounced it one of the best he's ever had.  BTW, bb said he and Mariton had already been there.  DAMN!

Re:PIE, OH MY, OH MY!! 2013/10/31 22:37:32 (permalink)
Well another day and MORE pie and some repeats.

After lunch with Povety Pete I went in search of 2 Pie places in Nashville that were close to The Pharmacy.  Geraldine's Greatest Chess Pies and Sweet Creations.  I drove up and down Rosa L Parks Blvd before I realized that Geraldine's was INSIDE the FARMERS MARKET.  D'OH

So i parked and walked inside, this was a cool spot for some wonderful food, there was BBQ, Korean, Asian, Indian, Cajun, Woodfired pizza, cupcake shop, the buttercake babe, and ver other eating places.  I looked all over and could not find Geraldine's.  :-(

I asked the lady at THE PEACH COBBLER FACTORY (really good cobbler sample) where Geraldine's was located and was told she comes in on weekends now, so....  TRAVELINMANNED

Oh well the driving rain and winds did not dampen my spirits nor the idiots who kept crashing around me on the rain slickened roads.

off to stop number 2 Sweet Creations and only 2 minutes from the Farmers market.  Pulling into the lot all signs looked promising, ther was a sign out front professing best pecan pie in Nashville, and several versions of pie available.  I parked walked across the parking lot to find...

The lights off and the door locked... TRAVELINMANNED TWICE!!!!

So without letting Steve get into my mind, I called and audible and drove down Jefferson Ave towards Fisk Univ.  There on my right was a smokin wonder Ooh Wee BBQ and a sign that said "Fresh Hand Pies $.99"

So I swung in and ordered a peach and an apple, they were out of peach, so I took an apple one to go.  I should have drove off when I heard the beep beep beep of the microwave oven from inside.

The pie was on the small side but for $ .99 what can you expect.  How about being good??  The ends were nuclear hot, the middle was ice cold, and it tasted like they fried it in last weeks used MOTOR OIL not vegetable oil.

I wanted to like OOH WEE BBQ - but EPIC FAIL.

So on my return to Lebanon I was still in search of dessert and...
yep you guessed it Sunset Family Restaurant.

So all in all not a bad day, now waiting out the hurricane force winds to blow the trash cans down the street, thank goodness they postponed beggars night, those kids would have been blown away like Dorothy tonight.

Sorry to hear about the disappointment with the fried pies, but it looks like you bounced back in fine fashion!

On a really sad note, I saw on the news last night that a nine year old in Nashville was electrocuted by a downed power line.  So very sad.

CTD - No sluggies on the menu, but lemon, coconut, chocolate and banana pudding were on the menu yesterday.

But seeing that BBG was my 4th of 6 lunch stops yesterday, I was quickly hitting the wall and didnt have room for more than one piece of pie.

Ok, i have been slacking in my posting duties, not because I was lazy or anything, but I have been recovering from a PIE COMA.  So here are some highlights of the past week or so.

    DEMO's
    http://demosrestaurants.com/

Heath Bar Pie - Graham Crust pressed into the baking dish then a chocolatey cream/ pudding mixture covered in crushed heath bar pieces.  OMG my blood sugar was... well my meter just waved "HI" at me afterward.  This was good but OVERLY SWEET

I could not even finish it, because it was SO sweet.

Ok next up on the PIE TRIP

    Bon Ton Mini Mart
    http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=343

    Pie Trio:
    Lemon Box
    Chocolate
    Chess

The lemon box was just tart enough to cut the sweetness, the choclate was still slightly warm from just being made and the chess, I ate so fast i cant remember.  You don't believe me...

Tom's Blue Moon BBQ and some bananananana puddin
    http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/8152/toms-blue-moon-bbq

So that brings me to today and

The Loving Pie Company - Nashville
    http://www.thelovingpiecompany.com/

OMG - CALLING BUFFETBUSTER Pick up the piece of Chocolate Peanut Butter Chess Pie.

    Another Pie Trio:
    Red Velvet Chess
    Chocolate Peanut Butter Chess
    Regular Chess

The chocolate peanut butter chess needed a cold glass of milk to wash it down, WOW was it so good.
Regular Chess Pie - not overly sweet, but a wonderful balance

    Chocolate Peanut Butter Chess Pie

    Red Velvet Chess Pie

They have both sweet and savory pies and the chicken pot pie looked good, I ordered a shepherd's pie, but the waitress was so flumoxed that I ordered 3 pieces of pie she forgot to put the savory order in.

She also forgot to tell me that their special of the day was Apple Cranberry Pie and Pumpkin Chess Pie.  If i wasnt headed to Knoxville tomorrow i might go back for more pie, but ETH calls.

    So tender and flaky

    All gone again

I did get a piece of Red Velvet Chess to take home (my dad's wife LOVES red velvet anything)

Then onto my next dessert at Rotier's

    Rotier's
    http://www.rotiersrestaurant.com/

    Lemon Box Pie

    Chocolate Milk Shake

Then just down the street to

    Elliston Place Soda Shop
    http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/97/elliston-place-soda-shop

    Bananananna Puddin

    Pineapple Soda

The bananananana puddin was still warm and gooey it was just made, and the tartness of the pineapple and the sweetness of the ice cream made the soda wonderfully refreshing after the HUGE day I had just had.

So for now the pies and desserts are caught up.
