Paying extra for real maple syrup at a restaurant - what do you think? Wed, 11/27/13 2:44 PM (permalink)
What do you think of a restaurant that charges $2 extra for real maple syrup (as opposed to the Mrs. Butterworth's)? I was very surprised to see this at a well-known Chicago restaurant recently. I didn't end up ordering anything that required syrup, simply because I didn't want fake stuff or to pay $2 extra.

Thoughts?

I was surprised that they charged for real maple syrup at the Blue Benn, in the very heart of a syrup-making region

I experienced this at Wishbone in Chicago. A restaurant I didn't like the one previous time I went in 1997 and like even less after this experience in October.

I don't like it, but I guess it depends on where you are.  If you're in a maple syrup-making area (Vermont, Minnesota, Quebec), then I think the real thing should be served without additional charge.  If you're not --  well, I'd rather they be upfront about it.  I'm allergic to something in the fake maple syrups and if that's all they've got, I have to take a pass on pancakes or waffles or eat them without syrup.

I think it's a bush league move and wouldn't frequent the restaurant. Heck, mark up the item a buck or two (just don't let me know). Next thing you know they will be charging extra for butter. I say BAN margarine and Mrs. Butterworth's.

Quality maple syrup is expensive...I either have it sent from Vermont, or buy it locally.  I dislike the idea of paying for it, but do so to enhance whatever I am eating...and not ingest some chemical crap version with 85 ingredients in it.

It will be one very cold day in Hell before I'd pay extra for syrup.

I've seen that many times and have paid for the real maple syrup. The difference in flavor is drastic.

I agree that the flavor difference between real maple syrup and the fake stuff is distinct and radical.  However, I'm also left with a bad taste in my mouth over paying extra for a good quality product a restaurant should be serving in the first place.  The solution, as stated above, is to serve real maple syrup and raise the price on the menu item a little bit, spreading out the cost among all the diners.

I've been a big fan of Wishbone for more than 20 years.  I've always felt they served a top notch product, sold at a reasonable, but not cheap price, so I'm surprised this is even an issue with them.

Most Independent Restaurant owners are poor marketers.
Turn a negative into a positive.
Build  the difference between fake & real stuff into the price of the meal and then shout to the rafters that you're serving REAL Maple Syrup with your meals.
Most consumers will think they're getting a good deal.
Perception is everything in marketing your product.
Ask them a week later about the meal and all they'll remember is " That place served REAL Syrup and boy was it good".
How much did you pay? - "I don't Remember"
The value is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

This is becoming all to frequent ala the airline baggage fees model.  I love real maple syrup, dislike the extra charge shake down, but usually end up paying or getting an omelet!

It's not a big deal - sugar or real syrup.

I don't eat breakfast but if I did and I ordered pancakes or a waffle I would pay extra for real maple syrup because the fake stuff is nasty.

I am not sure that the producers of maple syrup can charge enough.  It is enormous work and the end product is just a fraction to the total amount collected.  I do not know how they make a profit.  The end result of real maple syrup is exceptionally delicious.

I don't order flapjacks or waffles if they don't have maple syrup. And if they want to charge extra for it I order something else. There is one exception. At the Waffle House, when I order one of my semiannual waffles I use honey instead of syrup.

Some places include that cost in their pricing.  If they don't, however, as a big maple syrup fan, I will pay a little extra for the real thing.  If they don't have it at all, I use jam or marmalade with butter.

I would be influenced by the way the syrup is served. If you get a bottle or pitcher of maple syrup so that you can use it as lavishly as you please, I wouldn't be too annoyed by the charge. If they give it to you in just one or two itty-bitty cups, then I would pass.

I just saw 8 oz. of maple syrup at ALDI for $3.99. I think I'll slip a bottle into my purse Euro-bag just in case.

If I'm going to eat great pancakes or waffles in a good diner or restaurant and they want to charge a couple of bucks extra for real maple syrup, you bet your butt I'm going to shell out those few extra bucks for the real mcCoy.

Virtually no restaurants in Southeast Pennsylvania provide real maple syrup. The exception used to be cracker barrel-a chain, and it was the main reason we would occasionally go there(their pancakes and french toast were acceptable) However, in the last couple years they moved to a blended syrup which, if I remember corectly is 55% maple and 45% non-maple(the percentages are in small print on the little glass bottles they bring to the table), so we go much less frequently

My 80 plus year old Dad solves the problem by bringing his own maple syrup to his favorite breakfast places. They don't mind- why should they, it saves them syrup costs.

I don't recall ever seeing real Maple syrup in a restaurant, not even Cracker Barrel, except on the Minnesota North Shore at a couple of restaurants and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's annual pancake breakfast at the end of Maple syruping season. You would know if you knew the difference. One problem with real Maple syrup is it is really not all that syrupy and soaks into pancakes. People thus pour way too much on until the pancakes are saturated and then sits on top. We can't leave it to our grandkids to put their own on.

I produce my own and just get enough for holiday treats. I started with 5 Sugar Maples a few years ago but now I have at least 8 I can tap now. I've nurtured those trees from saplings 35 years ago. It is not cheap when you have to collect and boil down as much as 40 gallons to get one gallon of syrup. Quality can vary as well from year to year. Here is my "Tonkawoods" brand from a few years ago compared to an Archer Farms organic product.

It's really a non issue to me.   I don't get  "the principle of the the thing" on this subject, now if a restaurant in say....northern New England completely removed real maple s yrup off the menu- that would be a  different story. My gripe is restaurants that always seem to remove the coolest (to me) item off the menu and keep the stuff on that I couldn't care less about .

Yeah, when Waffle House took the porterhouse off the menu and replaced it with the ribeye I was really bummed.

Different products cost different amounts. If a place offered a steak-and-eggs breakfast that included a sirloin, but offered a filet or porterhouse at an upcharge, I wouldn't be outraged, I would be grateful. At that point, it would be my choice as to which I would order.

I agree with that. It's the syrup thing that bugs me.
