Who is on the list and why is this list notable? I prefer not to chase links without some kind of positive endorsement.

No Carolina joints on the list, JRP.  The rankings are based solely on the reviews posted at Tripadvisor, so take them with a big grain of salt.

I just visited one of the places, Bogart's Smokehouse in St. Louis last weekend.  It was very enjoyable and I plan on writing a Roadfood review.

But, it is nowhere near a top ten bbq parlor in the country.

Hmmm...  Florida has three BBQ joints in the so-called 'top 10', but is not listed as a state.

As with all lists, I tend to ignore them. Seems like Tripadvisor and Yelp and UrbanSpoon consider themselves the ultimate authorities. And they are but mostly of lists.

It is a very surprising list.  I was not surprised to see Franklin (Austin TX) as the country's best, but honestly, #2-10 are mostly a mystery to me, and, I suspect, to everybody else.  The only one that I've actually been to is Hickory Pit in Chattanooga, the only Tennessee joint to make the list, which I imagine has everybody in Memphis enjoying a hearty laugh.  Hickory Pit's certainly not bad, but I wouldn't put it on a Chattanooga top five, never mind a nationwide top 10.

Put another way, I'm glad that Georgia came in as the top state, but I'd rather we win on a list that I can get behind.  This one's just plain weird.

Trip Advisor is comments from people that have been to places and liked them or disliked them.  I always read the comments with a grain of salt.  The one thing that I do know is that you cannot go by a trip advisor list of anything!

Lists are lists...I find even here on RF my BBQ taste's don't always agree with many of you all. That doesn't demean either of our personal preferences, it just speaks for individual likes and dislikes.

As I always tell my economics classes ...

    "Tastes and preferences vary.
And it is good that they do.
Should they not there would be only two happy people on earth.
And they would be married to each other.
The rest of the world then forever condemned to misery and longing".

But how did Trip Advisor select these particular places, I wonder?  Are they the restaurants that had the fewest negative ratings, or fewest negative comments, against an overall high batting average?  I remember reading that people are more likely to write a negative review than a positive one.  But "the ten barbecue restaurants least likely to provoke an argument" isn't much of a name for a list.

I imagine that they're all good restaurants, sure, but I also think that if they were *that* good, then #2 - 10 would have appeared previously on somebody's - anybody's - ten best list before now.  This is like reading the year-end Entertainment Weekly and finding a list of the ten best movies of the year and never hearing of a one of 'em before.  Maybe they're great, but... huh?

This really made the local news here in Austin. You should see the village idiots the media decided to stick a microphone in front of as they berated the rest of the country's bbq. Made me sad. I travel a great deal and there is great bbq to be found all over. This whole obsession with sauce down here I don't get. You don't want sauce, don't get any. Geez.

I've been to Captain's BBQ in Palm Coast, and came away underwhelmed. I'd rate the Sonny's chain much higher. Salt Water Cowboy's near St. Augustine is better, but the best in that part of the state for my money is Smokin' D's, located in a little shack at the corner of US-1 and FL-206. Take-out only, but very good bbq.

Sonny's, by virtue of the fact that it started as a single restaurant in Gainesville and its bbq style is kept true to the original by its owner, Sonny Tillman, is not only the best bbq chain I've ever been to, I'd rate it the best chain restaurant period.

But the best bbq I've ever eaten was at Buz & Ned's in Richmond, VA.

To me the 'list' seems to be like those ad agency - produced "Best Steakhouse in America" lists where the local joint is listed #4.  To give their (hidden agenda) list 'credibility' they always put Peter Luger's at #1 and includes some other famous places like Bern's, Charlie Palmer's, etc.

So, your head starts to nod when you see Franklin's #1, but starts to shake at all the other 'unknowns/never heard-of'; they needed to season the list with, say, Wilber's, Arthur Bryant's, Scott's, Skyline, etc. in order to be credible.
