Anyone recall: Ollie's Trolley burgers>??? Wed, 05/26/04 8:29 PM (permalink)
I believe it morphed from the LUM's chain (best seasoned fries ever!), but OLLIE'S TROLLEY featured gourmet burgers, at cute walk-up locations. One of the best burgers I recall. Very complex, spicey taste. Anyone recall them, as well???

I remember the Ollie Burgers from Lums, but I never heard of Ollie's Trolley.

Michael, Nice to see you with your 4 stars !!

Ollies Trolly is still active here in Louisville...I believe there are a couple of them in the area. They are in Cincy also.

If I am not mistaken, I posted a "copy-cat" recipe for these burgers in misc. food related; "long gone regional chains". etc. The only things I really remember about Lums wuz the hot dogs & Heiniken (prob. not spelled rite ;) beer; circa San Juan PR 'bout '66. I was 11 @ time...

Thanks. I did like the Ollie Burgers, and I'll be on the lookout for the Ollie's Trolley next time I pass through Cincinnati or Louisville.

Those hot dogs steamed in beer were out of this world. I remember getting them at a Lum's (I believe it was the first Lum's) in Miami back in 1958. Yum!

The only one I know of in the Cincy area is near the intersection of Liberty and Central Parkway. Try to blend in. It's not the best part of town.

Yes, Wally, but the burgers there really are among the best in Cincinnati

No doubt. I just didn't want anyone stumbling into something they weren't prepared for. My wife worked a few blocks from Ollie's a few years ago, so I partook on occasion. My mom is from that neck of the woods, so I'm not intimidated. It's like a homecoming.

Atlanta used to have Lum's and Ollie's. Good burgers, seasoned alot. Comparable to Checker's burgers now. Ollie's was in a prime downtown real estate area at the end of a parking lot. The owner decided it was more profitable to sell out for a new building than sell burgers. He made a bundle so it was the right decision.

Call me crazy but I seem to recall one in Olmsted Falls, OH. I do know that they called the burgers Trolley burgers, but this was such a little hole in the wall place, that there couldn't possibly be more than one...They called them "Trolley" because of the restaurant's proximity to the railroad tracks....

There was an Ollie's Trolley in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the 1970s, near the University of Tennessee.

There is an Ollie's Trolley in downtown DC near Metro Center. Burgers are good, french fries are highly spiced and very addicting, and the milkshakes are just great. It is so funky and out of place that I never assumed it was a chain.

                              Kristi,
I've never seen an Ollie's Trolly that could hold 20 people comfortably. They tend to be mock-ups of a small old fashioned trolly-car. Lots of walk-up business. The Burgers are good and the atmosphere definitely '50's sidewalk lunchwagon.
Here is a link to a review and history of the Louisville Ollie's....I think you will find the story of the chain interesting. and the picture of the stand is great.

Al: the Ollie's Trolley in Cincinnati - in as Wally said, a questionable neighborhood - looks virtually identical to the picture on that page linked to in your post.

Burgers are great there, fries are better, and they do smoker work - will smoke turkeys for a per pound fee, do their own smoked ribs and etc. It prolly was originally part of a franchise, but I am pretty sure the owner does his own thing now, completely seperate from the franchise except for the name

As the article says, The Chain burned itself out....and the stands still open are individually owned and maintained. I am glad that a few remain to bring back the memories!!

I believe the one that now operates in the Over The Rhine section of Cincinnati is the same one that once operated on Sixth Street. I worked at the LaRosa's down the street from it in the early 80's.
