Morey Amsterdam sandwich

Hello Deli Experts,

A friend has wondered for years what are the ingredients on a Morey Amsterdam (of TV fame on the Mary Tyler Moore show) sandwich, he vaguely remembers it being topped with Russian dressing. We were not sure if it was a sandwich Morey ate at work on the show, or whether it is a delli concoction named for the celebrity after the show stopped.

Any info would be appreciated, my friend swears he's not making this up.....

First things first: Morey was on the Dick Van Dyke Show, playing Buddy Sorrell, one of the writing team along with Dick (as Rob Petrie) and Rose Marie (as Sally Rogers). Mary Tyler Moore, of course, played Laura, Rob's wife.

Now, on to the sandwich: I'm pretty sure it used to be on the Stage Deli's menu, which can be found at https://secure.surging.com/stage/nymenu.cfm. They've updated some names to reflect more current celebrities (see Sandler, Adam), but you can still get a Tony Randall, may he rest in peace.

Thanks Flattop! Remind me not to pick TV Trivia on Jeopardy, I guess it shows I was just a kid when the DVD show aired and I have never had cable to see the reruns, but I still have warm fuzzy memories of Mary Tyler Moore.

Enjoyed browsing through the Stage Deli's menu, everything looked delicious. The Morey Amsterdam sandwich has either faded into obscurity or possibly been rechristened as the Rudy Giulani sandwich. Thanks again for the info.

I remember Morey Amsterdam from his eponymous television show on Dumont, and from his turn as host of Broadway Open House on NBC, before Jerry Lester took it over. When he had the Morey Amsterdam show Art Carney used to be a regular, and he'd dance while Amsterdam played his cello.
 
But I never heard of his sandwich.

It took almost SEVEN years, but thank goodness we finally have an answer to this question that has obviously been keeping folks up all night for nearly a decade.

I have wondered about these celebrity sandwiches. Do you think they actually ordered these concoctions or the restaurant owners were just trying to generate a little publicity with the celebrities going along. I suspect the latter in a lot of cases. There was a funny "Curb your enthusiasm " show concerning the renaming of a celebrity sandwich.

Sounds dry.

There's an old SNL skit with Billy Crystal and some other guys dressed as old Jewish men in a deli.  If I recall, the skit goes on about a Morey Amsterdam and says to a piano player "gimme a c, a bouncy c" and then sings, "you take a load a cream cheese, you put it on a bun, but not to much or you'll burn the top of your tongue...da da da dee dee dee..whatever the hell you want." 
 
 

The bit about "Gimme a "C", a bouncy "C"..." would have been Martin Short's "Jackie Rogers" character, a sort of caricature/homage to George Burns and other aging icons of old time show business.  He also used that character on the Canadian sketch comedy series, "SCTV".
 
As for whether or not he ate ham, I don't know.  But I do know the kosher dietary laws can be very mysterious.  For example, any landsman can tell you, even pork and shrimp can magically be made kosher if they are consumed in a Chinese restaurant.  Especially on Christmas Eve.

I used to delivery bacon and peanut butter sandwiches to a lawyer with the same magical equation.  If it's delivered, it's kosher. 
 
And I remember Martin Short being in the mix, but for some reason I keep thinking Eddie Murphy, too.  I don't know, I can't find the skit on youtube anyways.
