M&J, R.I.P.

We've just received notice that M&J Sanitary Tortilla Factory in Albuquerque has closed for good. There is some talk of another restaurateur moving into the space, but we'll keep a spot in our heart for the Montoya family's definitive New Mexican restaurant ... always our first stop in Albuquerque. http://fototime.com/E9586804C541604/standard.jpg

I'm very sorry to hear this! Although I must admit, when I sleepily looked at the title, "M & J R.I.P.", I just about fell outta my chair... I thought you guys were dead! While I'm very sorry about the closing of the Tortilla Factory, I'm very happy you two are fine!

Steve I nearly died................I thought that Michal and Jane were in a terrible car accident and had been killed! What a relief to read what this was really all about.

As someone who spent 13 years living in New Mexico, seven of them in Albuquerque, I gotta say...not really that much of a loss. M&J's had been coasting on its reputation for years, and when I was working in downtown Albuquerque, it had been downgraded by myself and the friends I went to lunch with to "the place we'd go to when we didn't have time to go to the really good places." Now, when Sadie's closes, then I'll break out the black armband.

And what would be served at Michael & Jane's funeral (for discussion purposes only, of course)?

Angel food cake, heavenly hash ice cream, divinity, and perhaps just a few devil's food cookies! Sorry to have alarmed anybody, but I hope that when we do go Stephen will attach a nice funereal Dixieland .wav file to the R.I.P. notice! -- Michael

I think I would be REALLY P.O.ed if all that was being served and I ..... was already DEAD! Much better as a last meal, and then I could die happy!

Katie, I think you might want some Pepe's white clam pie on that buffet too.

.....now that you mention it signman, katie, and I95, I'd have to add a mexican/ asian/greek buffet.(with dancers) and can't forget the ice cream , root beer floats and milk shakes to go with the pies.

Wouldn't it be the ultimate post-mortem, "keep 'em laughing" move if Michael and Jane's joint will specified that their wake be catered by Ruby Tuesdays?

The demise of M & J is an ultimate tragedy. The last time I went there back in 1996, the food was still unbelievably phenominal. If it did go downhill (which I really really question ) then it must have been way afterwards. What a sad shame!

Wanderingjew: I'm sorry that you question my assertion. However, the simple fact of the matter is that by your own admission, the last time you ate there was in 1996, whereas I ate there with steadily decreasing regularly from 1994 to 2002, and I can tell you that the food underwent a significant downturn in quality during that time.
