The Halfmoon Inn has pretty good Rib's. It is near the Surf Ballroom, where Buddy Holly did his last gig, In Clear Lake Iowa, not far from Mason.

Not sure about bbq down there. My sister lives in Mason City and the place everyone raves about is the Northwesten Steak house. They fry them up in an insane amount of butter. On weekends you can wait for hours, Weekdays you should be able to get in. I've posted a link. http://www.masoncityia.com/northwestern/

Bill's Bar-B-Q at 215 S. Madison in Mason City. Don't expect much in the way of atmosphere or selection (your choice is ribs or more ribs, with beans, slaw, and bread), but, unlike many BBQ places in Iowa, the meat's actually hung over smoke. Papa's American Cafe on Highway 122 East has barbecue ribs and chicken which have also actually been smoked. Gad, how terrible that in my home state the best thing I can say about a barbecue place is that the meat's actually been smoked. Really, though, Bill's is pretty good. The Half Moon has more-than-decent hamburgers; I've never had the ribs there.

Sorry Jim, Hickory is OK for a sandwich and ice cream, but I don't find the BBQ exciting. There may be hope for Mississippi Matt's BBQ out of Dallas Center--tried it at Des Moines farmers' mkt, and enjoyed.

Big Daddy's in Des Moines has good BBQ, too.

Would Hickory Park in Ames be this huge, overbusy, terribly noisy place? My cousin took me there, and I can't put my finger on it, but I didn't much like the ribs... or anything else. Aren't their ribs what you'd call "chewy"?
