benne wafers

Hello all! Busily masterminding our forthcoming road trip from the beautiful Garden State to even more beautiful Sanibel Island, FL, in late August. We'll be doin' the I-95 thing and will be going past and maybe into Savannah. Are benne wafers only found in this area, and if so, or even if not, where would be a good place to buy some of these cookies? I really am not into buying expensive gift tins where you're paying for the tin, really. We just want a roadfood-type bag to buy and eat in the car. More regional questions as they come up. So far I've got one brown expando-folder nearly full of loose info.

I have seen the regular cellophane-bag variety of benne wafers in Piggly Wiggly stores. You might be able to find one convenient to your trip here http://www.pigglywiggly.com/cgi-bin/customize?storelocations.html but I don't see anywhere at the site where I can find out whether they're stocked for sure. They're usually in a little local-foods section along with some Rockland Plantation stuff. Have a great trip!
