I like Melinda's and also Blairs Death Sauce. They're hot, but not just hot for the sake of being hot --- they have flavor.

Franks to cook with (must marinate them wings!) and Liquid Stoopid (yep - that how it's spelled) for special occasions. Makes me sweat just thinking about it!

My current favorite is "Hula Girl" Chipotle Habanero hot sauce. Its got good heat, but excellent flavor - a good balance.

Holy buckets. I just got in some Daves Ultimate Insantity hot sauce. It's more of a food additive than a sauce. I put 6 drips in some vinegar that I added to my fajitas just now. It added a good flavor and I really didn't notice the heat in my mouth. But half way through one fajita my entire head broke out into sweat, even the back of my scalp. I'm not sure what to think. I guess if you like to sweat.

I am a Tarheel born and raised. Texas Pete is THE sauce for Q and hot dogs but I use Tabasco for everything else.

Love the story about the owner of Texas Pete meeting the first President Bush who asked how can you name a hot sauce made in NC Texas Pete? His reply was same way a President can claim to be from Texas when he is from Maine.

I found the best hot sauce while vacationing in the Bahamas - Clarkes Goat Peper Sauce. Un-believable! Smothered some very tasty conch fritters with the hot sauce on the table. Turned out to be Clarkes - bought 4 bottles home. Not sure if its available in the states.

Instead of paying big $$$ for the "gourmet" hot sauces, sometimes I try sauces that I see on the shelf and have never heard of. It's hit and miss, but fun to explore. I've tried some imported table sauces from Mexico (we have well stocked Hispanic food sections where I live) and usually they are pretty decent. Also closeouts are sometimes acceptable. A couple of unknown brands like "El Pato", and "Louisiana Bat Sauce" (both .49), have been pleasant surprises. Often it's just marketing, distribution, and MARKUP that determines if food item is successful or not.

I worked in NE LA for several years in the 80's and Panola hot sauce was in most of the small cafes/truck stops....it used to be sold in Delchamps grocery stores in MS/LA/AL....whenever i see a bottle now, I buy it...kinda scarce in Mobile...Panola's got a fuller flavor than Crystal and not as hot as Tabasco....Alaga hot sauce is also a favorite, made with Alaga syrup and has a good, mild flavor..
