 I've got brats and beer. Now what?

I've never had a brat to my knowledge. I'm in Louisiana and I just don't recall seein' many of these around.

Anyway, I got about 5 beers and two packs of 6 Johnsonville Brats; one stadium and one smoked.

What do I do now? Normailly, I'd just drink the beers while cooking 'em on the grill like I do sausage. While, there would prolly be nothing wrong with that, what do you suggest I do?

      I heard that. I alotted the five for cooking if necessary. I got 15 more. That should be plenty.

          It sounds like you have a good plan! Now, you might want to try simmering the brats in some of that beer prior to grilling with some chopped onions for about ten minutes-I'm from the middle of Brat country and it adds just a little bit of special to these wonderful sausages.

            That's what I was lookin' for. Describe the simmering in beer process. Do I completely cover the brats with beer? Half way? Barely cover the bottom of the pan with beer?

            Enlighten a southerner.

              The hubby's not home, so I decided to write in case this was time sensitive...he covers them in beer and adds some onions - I 'm not sure on how long though - I think just until they turn opague. Then he grills them to perfection, and serves them with a spicy mustard. Have a great time drinkin' and bratin'!

                  We found a new mustard at Sams Club that is called Brats and Beer.
                  It is realy spicy, but some of the best mustard that I have ever tasted.

                    Wisconsin Style

                    1 doz. Brats (fresh) not smoked
                    Beer to cover (plain old Bud)
                    1 med large sweet onion (not Red) sliced
                    1/2 stick butter

                    Place brats in dutch oven with beer, onion and butter
                    Bring to a boil,reduce to simmer and cook till done 15-20 minutes

                    Grill Brats on preheated Grill untill Golden Brown

                    Return Brats to beer mixture and hold until ready to serve

                    Serve on Rolls with Spicy mustard, saurkraut, onions and of course an Ice Cold Beer

                      O.k. call me stupid BUT, one thing I like about grilled brats is the crispy skin, does returning them to the beer mixture not take away that juciy "crunch"?

                          grill/smoke first and then simmer in beer and onions. my wife's from wisconsin and said this is the only way. weeellllllll, i read somewhere to do just the opposite. did that only once. way too dry. even with the simmering, they do still have the "snap" when bitten into.

                              I just cook them on the cooler side of the grill... Toss in some hickory chips over the coals, drink a beer and babysit them! I've never had too many complaints!

                              If you want to get creative, get a large piece of aluminum foil, lay the brats in the center, create some edges to hold in the beer your about to add, then thin slice some onions and toss on top along with some fresh pressed garlic... Shake on a little seasoning salt, seal the aluminum container and cook on the grill (between the hot and cooler side) for about 10 or 15 minutes (times will vary depending on what you consider is hot or cool), flipping the package over now and then... Remove the brats and finish them off on the hot side to brown them up real quick... Serve with the onions as a topping!

                                        I haven't had any blood sausages, but I can confidently recommend the Thuringer summer sausages, and the smoked pork chops are irresistible.

                                          A few years ago I attended a dinner by our company in Kankakee, IL. It was a German restaurant and I got the sausage platter. I asked what the dark sausage was and I was informed that it was a blood sausage. It may have been delicious but I will never know. I pushed it aside and never tasted it.
