    White Manna

The Hackensack White Manna on River Street (The original White Mana is on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City) has been doing burgers the same way since day one: greasily, juicily, and on a giant and very hot grill directly behind the counter. The sauteed onions put the hearty burgers over the top (you'd expect White Castle-style sliders, but these are actually fairly substantial patties), and the fries are crisp and tasty. And that, really, is about it. They don't serve much else, and there isn't much space in which to eat it. They don't make places like White Manna anymore for the reasons above; but why would you make another White Manna when there are not one, but two places doing old-school burgers to perfection in North Jersey? Eat up, and tuck your napkin in.

My experience is they are good but hardly hearty. They take a rather small amount of meat, maybe 1 to 2 ounces and make it fit, rather perfectly on a 4 inch bun.

There are many great things about the White Manna, but one I just recently learned is that the burgers are available for breakfast, which I took advantage of a few months ago. Nothing starts the day like a slider!

don't go sober. burgers are best enjoyed drunk. the one in jersey city is great (drunk) the chef puts an 1in roun 1in high or so ball of meat on griddle that has onions cooking on it all day then proceeds to slap into a patty. this technique is not approved by most chefs but works very well here. also have the cheese steak
comes served on toast with mayo and pickles on the side.
