Thanks to the US Marines, I spent 13 months on Okinawa in 1973-74. I discovered that the 15,000 or so marines there (and quite a few Navy and Air Force personnel also) represent a serious incentive to create and serve food that pleases the American palate. I had my first taco there (never encountered one growing up on the east coast of the US) and I recall there was an A&W Rootbeer franchise. So it doesn't surprise me they have this kind of riff on the hot dog.
