transfats alternatives

Ok...so lets say transfats have to go. I am curious where they are and what the alternatives will be.


My two cents....Transfats are bad for you, in large quanties. Moderation is the key. I do think that often they are the result of profit making rather than necessity. So in a lot of cases they may be replaced with a higher quality product and we will still be able to have the end result.

Back to the subject....what products will be eliminated and what are the most creative acceptible subsitites. Is Pennzoil coming out with an edible product? :-)

    Lets reverse your question and ask why so many foods have to be fried and/or deep fried in order to be edible by consumers? If it is moderation we are talking about, then the answer would be to offer less fried foods on the menu. The answer is as simple as that.

    Oh ya...I understand that. But wouldn't a safe donut be better than no donut at all? I am just curious as to what is on the danger list and what ways there are to have your cake and eat it too! :-)

    Curious thing about transfats ... my understanding is that when you make polyunsaturated oil very hot (such as to fry) ... polyunsaturates become transfats.
    I read that somewhere but haven't had the inclination to find another source.
    If that's the case, I'd like to know what is in the preparation that is being used commercially in restaurants that are claiming they are using non-transfat fryer oil.

    I prefer my fries made in duck fat. They taste much better and are healthier. Stop at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Check the ingredients used for their cakes and cookies for your answers. Any man made oil is going to yield transfats. A good alternative is rice bran oil. We cook with it all the time and it actually enhances the flavor of the food.

    A 'transfat' is oil that has been turned to a solid by the process of 'hydrogenation'. The way to have your donut & eat it too, is to make it with butter, lard, whatever and fry it in oil. Things to watch for (potentially 'on the danger list') are things that list "hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated" oils of some kind on their ingredients list. Bakery products are big users. Most anything now made with transfats was once made with other ingredients. We can pretty much get along without them. Old rules still apply : Everything in moderation, and Read the label!

    That is what I have been thinking. Hydrogenated products are cheap and they extend shelf life...but we got along without them before...we can do it again.

    It is easy to change to trans fat free cooking oils. There are many alternatives that work quite well-rice oil, canola oil, soy oil-these oils are around and some last longer than others. The next thing to be aware of is grocery labels-stay away from partially hydrogenated oils-now there are so many new products that are trans fat free and taste great.

    We weighed the pro's and con's of French fries and decided NOT to serve them..Let mac Donalds and others do that..Give'em food they will remember and come back for time after time..
    Being in back of mac donalds u have no idea how many people say they hate the crappola but go there because the options are limited..We are a viable alternative!!

    i'm partial to peanut oil myself, but because some people are sensitive to peanuts i doubt it will become a universal replacement.. i really don't like the flavor of rapeseed oil, aka canola (canadian oil, low acid)

    Fries or potato wedges baked with olive oil, garlic, salt and rosemary spice are great!!
