Michael perhaps you might change your mind if you visit Ellendale's in Nashville.  This is not the Golden Corral or Ryan's.  It is much more upscale according to Poverty Pete and The Mayor.

I have seen the setting and it is very picturesque with nice gardens and a nice place to start off Sunday morning.

My all-time favorite was the Sunday Brunch buffet in The Palm Court at the Plaza back in the 1990's when Donald Trump owned it.

Since the hotel was turned largely into condos several years ago The Palm Court is now strictly a la carte.

I've only been to a Luby's once, but at that time, it was a cafeteria, not a buffet.

I hate buffets as a rule, though I did enjoy the small brunch buffet at Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg, KY.   It seems, though, that they are now experimenting with a menu brunch rather than a buffet.  http://www.beaumontinn.com/dining.htm

I was in the business class Sky Team lounge at Heathrow over the holidays, and watched a small kid go up to the hot food table, lick her fingers, and use those same fingers to push some hot pasta dish off the serving spoon on to her plate.

As I said, I hate buffets.

Re:what is your fav buffet place? - Thu, 01/19/12 1:50 PM
I could write a book about the very unsanitary things that I have observed people doing at buffets.  Here are a few examples:

A child   (about 10 years old)  is standing at a buffet table and picking orange sections up one by one, smelling them and putting tem back into serving container.

Many people tasting their food as they move along in line, licking their fingers and then picking up a serving utensil.

People blowing their noses as they are in line to get food

People picking through containers of food looking for that certain "special" piece  (at least that is what I assume that they are doing)

People overloading their plates and walking back to table with plates dripping  or food dropping off.

Once, I actually saw a man bring his soiled plate to the dessert bar.  We were sitting right next to it and this is what we saw him do.  He loaded his plate with different items.  He got to one last item which he wanted...........his plate was full......what to do?  He solved it right away by scraping the serving of chocolate pudding he had on his plate back into the serving container and now had room for that piece of pie (or whatever) that he thought he needed.  You  bet I called for the manager on that!

I could go on and on but guess I have explained enough so that you can understand why I hate buffets.

P.S.     I have seen  people acting like this at the most elegant buffets (and costly) in town too so it is not the type of buffet.  It is that people have dreadful manners no matter where you might go.

We have a branch of the Paula Deen chain in our local Caesar's-Bally's-Horseshoe Riverboat Casino. While not regular customers , we have enjoyed the Friday night Seafood Buffet and the Sunday Brunch several times. The place is always clean and well-stocked. We consider it to be the 'nicest' buffet in the area.
We seldom go to the 'trough' buffets that our grandkids tend to want to choose when we go out, but do make a Ryans stop when we have too. Not my first choice, for sure.

Only have the Golden Corral of the ones on your list. We do have (at least to my family) a decent Chinese buffet with sushi and a large stir fry station. (Mikasi or something like that in Jensen Beach, Fl)

Could it be the amount that people eat and the amount that is wasted?

The money spent on advertising?
Rent?
Insurance?
Salaries?
as opposed to what is taken in?

Good corporate citizens right? Johnson City Ryan's closes An employee of the Johnson City location called the Press this morning to report that he arrived at the restaurant this morning to find a letter on the door announcing the store's closing.
The letter informed visitors that the restaurant had "permanently closed."

My name is Andrew Bailey. I live in Johnson City, Tennessee. On January 12th I was hired to be a Manager in Training (MIT) at Ryan's Steakhouse. I was ecstatic! I had been looking for work for a really long time. I was told to call on the 15th to get my schedule. When I called Ryans said my first day would be 9:30 Friday morning. I arrived 15 minutes early today because I was so excited to start my new job. When I arrived, there was not a single car in the parking lot. I assumed I was early and the first to arrive. At 9:33 I walk up to the front entrance and there was a sign taped to the door saying. "We are sorry fore the inconvenience but this Rayns location is Permanently Closed." My hapiness instantly turned to sadness. I did not receive 1 phone call to notify me that 81 Ryans restaurants were closing after Thursday night as a result of a bankruptcy filing by its parent company, Buffets Inc. I'm speechless!!!!!!!...........I was planning on my first two checks from Ryans to help cover my rent, food, and other essential bills. I stopped looking for work when I was hired because I had faith that Ryan's Steakhouse was going to be there for me. Now I am back to the drawing board.

thing is they spent a lot of money buying ryan's buffet out when they had problems themselves. I think that's what did them in...

some buffets.blogspot.com site has tons on them.

It's just amazing to me that there are blogs on any and everything.

Las Vegas had those buffets but they were lost leaders for customers to drop coins into their slot machines and tables.  They made money one way or the other. Now they're not even low priced.

The buffets in Los Angeles come and go.  All the Scandinavian buffets are long gone.  Several of the Chinese (???) buffets have closed even when they were packed to capacity.

A lot of them are owned by groups and you can only divide the bottom line so many times and make it worth it.

I only go to a buffet if that's where everyone else wants to go... or my mother.

You can also only fool people once or twice.  Hometown Buffet has the television advertisements where they show steaks and racks of ribs.  When you're there they slice you off a piece of overcooked steak...not the entire steak.  They offer you one or two ribs after you've waited for them to be brought out from the back.

They are not what they advertise.

My highschool job was at a buffet restaurant called Duff's Smorgasbord. They have long since been out of business and to my knowledge, there is only one left in existence and it is located in Pigeon Forge TN. I guess they bought rights to the name.
We frequent chinese buffets more than any other type of buffet. There is a new one in Alcoa TN called Asian buffet. They have the mongolian grill, sushi bar, and the regular offerings you might find.
We used to have a CiCi's Pizza buffet, but it went out of business. There is a Gatti's Pizza buffet if we really want pizza.
We also have Shoney's, Ryan's, KFC buffet. There is a mexican restaurant in town that has a buffet as well. Can't say I really like any of those.

There used to be a very good seafood buffet in Lexington called "The New Orleans House".  It wasn't cheap, but it was good.  We have a Chinese buffet here in Versailles, but it's not good.  The food is not even lukewarm for the most part, other than the soups.

I ate at that Duff's in Pigeon Forge probably 25 years ago. It had a stupid conveyor belt system that you grabbed food off as it went by. It was not my choice but my friends who wanted to "get stuffed at Duff's" I was happy they didn't want to go back there during or vacation.

There was a Duff's in Stuart, Fl that was quite popular during probably the early 80's.
There was quite a large food poisoning incident that made many people sick and sent several to the hospital. Seems like someone died but can't quite remember. That incident really did the place in and though it tried to keep operating it shut down shortly after. The location was as a few months ago operating as an Asian and still had the old Duff's round serving stations.

I've actually never been in the Pigeon Forge location, but if it's what I am thinking, you are referring to the wheel or carousel. I actually thought that was a pretty good idea. It is the most non-intrusive way to keep food on the buffet and also allows patrons not to have to nudge each other oout of the way. The food comes to you. They also had a stationary area that we called the horseshoe. The food worker could fill the buffet from the backside while patrons moved around the shoe to fill their plates.

Little history about Duff's. The founder was a man named Homer Duff. After he sold out, he started another successful buffet named Stacy's. I think he bought up alot of the old Duff locations and put the Stacey's name on them.

Andrea,  There was a "New Orleans House" in Louisville also. several of my kids made it their  Prom-Night Dinner stop back in the 1980's. I always thought that that was a real waste of money (for Prom Night) as most of the kids paid the big bucks (@$30) for the fancy seafood buffet then ate very little of anything !
We last visited the place in the early 90's after it had lost much of it's former quality...and were very disappointed in the poor food offerings and still higher price tag.

Great story!  Two of my grandchildren were free for evening and begging me to take them to their  "favorite Chinese buffet".  So off we go.  The waitress appeared at table for drink orders and I ordered a 1/2 carafe wine and told her that I would not be eating.  She said  "OK"  and soon came back with our drinks and assured me that it was ok for me to just have wine.

I, then , begin to notice that she kept walking  back and forth to our table and looking at us.  The kids were being very polite  and not wasting food so I could not figure out why she kept coming over to our table.  Finally, I asked her if something was wrong and her response was  "No,  the boss man  just wants me to make sure that you do not eat any food."

I loved it!

I had something similar happen once when I took my grandson and a pal of his to the local Frisch's for breakfast. The boys -- both were 10 or 11 at the time -- made four or five trips to the buffet, filling their plates and downing every bite while I just had coffee. A waitress came by the table every few minutes to ask whether I needed a refill of the carafe of coffee. About the fourth time, while I was still on my second cup, I asked her why, for the first time in all the visits to the place a waitstaffer was asking whether I wanted any refills, she told me the manager wanted to make sure I wasn't eating.

There is s Sunday Buffet Brunch in Frederick at Dutche's Daughter, that is spectacular, $25.00 a head, they make a scrambeled egg with jumbo crab and cheese dish that is amazing, everything else is first class, comes with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary, well worth the price and drive for all within a 60 mile radius!

This my favorite, followed by Golden Corral. At the Asian they have good soups, Mongolian grill, sushi, large variety of "Chinese" food and Hershey's ice cream. Decent price too.

The best buffet I've ever had the distinct pleasure of dining in is, without hesitation, Boma - Flavors of Africa ( http://disneyworld.disney...oma-flavors-of-africa/ ) at the gorgeous Animal Kingdom Lodge in Walt Disney World.

I totally agree, we've eaten there twice.

The Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom is our favorite....and we've tried every buffet at Disney World. It's the best way to eat there.  Chef Mickey's is also quality...but for variety and quality...Crystal Palace!!

The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia

It's the best one I've ever been to.

I've been there at least a dozen times over the last decade.  On the way down for the Glee Club gathering in South Carolina two years ago, I couldn't resist.  I just had to go 100 miles out of my way to get there.

Used to like Charlie Williams Pinecrest Lodge in Athens GA.  Another casualty of trying to cheapen the buffet and as a result people stopped coming.

mayor al

Andrea,  There was a "New Orleans House" in Louisville also. several of my kids made it their  Prom-Night Dinner stop back in the 1980's. I always thought that that was a real waste of money (for Prom Night) as most of the kids paid the big bucks (@$30) for the fancy seafood buffet then ate very little of anything !
We last visited the place in the early 90's after it had lost much of it's former quality...and were very disappointed in the poor food offerings and still higher price tag.

The one in LEX went downhill as well, Al, and became a Chinese buffet.  Go figure.

Shady Maple in Amish country, by far....

I find that Shady Maple is one of the better breakfast buffets around there, but for lunch and dinner, my favorite is Diener's in Lancaster; I've been eating there on trips in that area from even before they had a buffet, and their food is still just as good as the first time I ate there.

You're right. We eat there every trip to Amiah country...so much I don't think of it as a buffet, but of course it is...just with GREAT, quality food.....Love the pot roast, amish lima beans....and...oh hell, everything....but let's keep this place our secret!!!

I have on occasion attended special breakfast buffets...Mothers Day...etc..beyond that I avoid buffets like the plague. I prefer my food cooked to order and handled, oogled , or sneezed on by less than three people. We had a Big Country Buffet in a strip mall near our house (now a Super China Buffet). My wife and I decide maybe just once we'd give it a shot. We parked out front and watched a couple people struggling to squeeze through the door (and its not because the place was crowded) and decided we'd hit a diner instead.

The one in the Paradise plaza? I went to the Country buffet there once quite a while ago, I can't even remember who with, or what I had, I just remember not being very content with the whole affair, and I never went back. If I'm out on the Boulevard, I'm probably going to hit El Canelo or Tully's anyway, don't know why the heck I went there.

I used to really like the Der Dutchman buffet in Plain City, OH but the last 2 times went, the fried chicken was just terrible.  I still like the breakfast buffet but rarely make it out there during that time.

I have to admit I liked the Lady & Sons buffet last summer.  The chicken was all hot and fresh and several of the sides were very good.

I like BD's Mongoloan BBQ occasionally though I really only like one of the sauce options (I think it is spicy garlic or somethign like that).

There are also a couple of Indian Buffets that I like for lunch.  I just noticed yesterday that there is a new lunch buffet at the Afghan place near my office (Cafe Kabul) that I might go try soon.

I prefer the Golden Corral in my old home town in Texas.

I've been to a Chinese buffet and Hometown buffet out here.  I would choose the Chinese buffet over Hometown any day as Hometown really didn't have many choices for what I consider good food.

I also like Soup Plantation and usually prefer their salads over the other stuff.

I do like a good salad bar.
