what kind of rum should I use? Sat, 07/22/06 7:00 PM (permalink)
I'm going to have friends over for a BBQ tomorrow, and I want to have "coconut water ice" topped with "fresh cut pineapple chunks", and then, I'd like to offer a spoon (or 2 or 3) of rum.

I'm clueless as to the type of rum I should use, so, can you suggest something?

Thank you very much

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Are you asking about a rum to drink? If you are, then I recommend Mt. Gay Eclipse rum from Barbados. It holds up beautifully in a traditional Caribbean-style rum and tonic or rum and coconut water. If you can't find Mt. Gay, which is a dark rum, then I suggest Cruzan, which is made in the U.S. Virgin Islands -- St. Croix,to be specific -- and don't let anyone try to charge you for an "imported" rum with Cruzan.I always preferred Cruzan light rum to their dark rum. Under no circumstances pour Meyer's dark rum for a drink, except in something terribly fruity such as a Planters Punch.

It does not matter if it is for cooking or drinking. I go by Justin Wilson's sage advice "use the one dat you like, I guarantee!"

How about Cap't Morgan's Coconut rum?

I would say it depends on the rum flavor you want, something light like a white rum or a heavy rum flavor like Myers.

I have always like Myers any way. It make a great rum-coke and rum-tonic. One of my favorites is Myers-soda. I like the heavy taste.
