what part of the USA has the best food ? Wed, 06/24/09 5:13 PM (permalink)
Just happened to pick up a recipe book at the library and noted that the New England states have far and away the best food-----or so it seems.

Starting with New Haven---pizza
Thanksgiving from Mass ---turkey, corn, cranberrys, pumpkin

Cod fish cakes---- Lobster----Mussels and Clams
Chowder----Clam, fish and corn

Bluefish
New England Boiled Dinner----ham, or corned beef and cabbage
Corned beef hash
Boston Baked Beans

Chocolate chip cookies
Harvard Beets
Maple Syrup
Blueberries
No Atlantic Salmon

and I may have skipped a few others

There isn't another area close-----as far as I can see,
Not even with my new bi-focals  !!!!!

There's no denying that New England has lots of great food, but my vote is for the southern states. Country ham, fried chicken, biscuits n' gravy, blackberry cobbler, barbeque... damn fine eatin'!

I'll take Pacific northwestern, Alaskan salmon any day over north Atlantic salmon, just as I prefer Pacific snapper over Atlantic/Caribbean snapper.

New England boiled dinners are way too bland for my tastebuds

New Orleans creole cuisine and Southern food are way above New England in my kitchen and dinning room.

I would also rate southwestern recipes ahead of New England as far as regional platters, but hey I love differences among folks in every category of life, variety is surely the spice of life and if we all liked the same foods prepared the same way, what a boring life this would be, ditto for music, films, fashion, speak, the Arts etc etc

Being an old New Englander--i LOVE the traditional foods there--especially the seafood---BUT---if you are talking truly authentic-totally creative AMERICAN created foods--i have to say that southern Louisianna has got THE MOST DISTICTIVELY FABULOUS CDUISINE in the states---when i lived in NOLA we would get in a car on our days off and head out into the countryside LOOKING FOR A BAD PLACE TO EAT---THERE WEREN"T ANY!!! No matter what you THOUGHT of the appearance of a place--the food was fabulous. DIVES--Denny's clones-local places---even the chains--were great--those folks flat out know how to cook! Main dishe--vegies desserts-seafood-even burgers--so as far as i am concerned---NOL-Hands down!

Now if you asked what i MISSED the most---it would be New England--fish-clams-lobsters-bean pot dinners-Italian food and hot dogs!

If I were force to pick a region, the Pacific Northwest.  Probably because of it's amazing seafood and it's a melting pot of food cultures.

I think the greater NYC area is the biggest and best melting pot of food cultures in the USA.

I'm very fond of the Pacific northwest with its seafood , marionberry pie, and plethora of chefs who make  great American standards from fresh , local ingredients.

From all of the reviews and the plethora of them I figured that the New England area has some of the best around.

I have traveled the entire USA extensive and I have found that very good food can be found anywhere but my preference is the southeastern USA.

I always thought of New England as the land of the bland.  Pepper is an exotic spice to chowdaheads.

Hill, hills---we don't need no stinken Hills.  We got Oceans and Bays and lotsa sunshine.  Hills are nothin'---you bust your butt to walk up and when you get up there all you can do is walk back down.  Big deal.

Now Joe, just sit back and think---you, being a kind-a-sewer of fine Italian food-------where can you find more, right off the boat. delicious Italian food than in Boston's North Side------then just cause man can not live on pasta alone ---the very next night you can go to one of beau coo fish joints.

And that is only in Boston--- run out to the Cape or up to Maine -------- the food is excellente' no matter where you go in the great Northeast.  Mange, Mange.

                                            Hello All,
I don't know which region has the best food, but
the best food I've ever tasted has been the food
Mennonites cooked.  You want to take home-cooking?
Eat food that a Mennonite has cooked.
                                            Take Care,
                                            Fieldthistle

If you were born & spent a good chunk of your life in a certain area, I think some of those preferences (prejudices?) stay with you. As a born & bred NYer, I always found New England Italian somewhat bland. Now living in Florida, some Southern dishes taste too sweet. I doubt I'll ever warm up to grits!

Legitimate grits (stone ground from NC for instance) are a whole different ball game from the stuff you get at breakfast places down here.  If you get the chance, buy a small burlap bag of the good stuff and try them with heavy cream.  You might change your mind about grits.  I never liked them until I had a few really good versions.

Shrimp and grits at the Boat House at Inlet Bay ( never get the name of that place exactly correct) just outside of  Charlston...My favorite version.

Some of their BBQ chicken, baked beans and cole slaw is out of this world - and so is some their bread!
