Do you by any chance have a Fuddrucker's nearby?I have purchased their hamburger buns when I wanted a "special bun". They also make buns for hotdogs.

If you live in the Chicago area, get Rosen's with poppy seeds.

            I agree with UncleVic.
Hot Dog and Hamburger baking pans are available from Chicago Metalic or on the King Arthur Flour website.

Regardless of who makes them I seem to prefer the hot dog buns that are stuck together side-by-side resulting in a bun with less "crust". This gives more suface area to brush with garlic butter before grilling. If you prefer a soft bun try steaming it. Sometimes I moisten a paper towel with HOT water, wrap it around the hot dog bun and zap it in the microwave for about 5 seconds - be careful not to overzap - as all microwaves a different this technique may require some experimenting with the power settings and zap time to perfect .

believe it or not, PUBLIX supermarkets(I live in Tampa) have wonderful bakery products which are made on the premises.....for hot dogs,I like the Chicago style 'hard rolls' or their small hero rolls, the regular hot dog rolls are nice as well

Lulu's Chicago Style Eatery, 119-A Beechnut Street, Trussville (phone #655-0029) serves an authentic Chicago style hot dog (Vienna Beef) on a steamed poppy seed bun. Give them a call for their supplier. Chicago hot dog stands use S.Rosen or Gonella poppy seed buns. These buns are par baked and cannot be eaten without steaming to complete the baking process. Sam's Club's in the midwest carry S.Rosen poppy seed buns which are fully baked.

Those New England hot dog buns are great...it looks like two pieces of bread stuck together so you can toast both sides.

Or you could go country and eat'em wrapped in Wonder Bread.

I live in Connecticut, and I've sorta always wondered, are New England style rolls marketed in other places in the country, and are they marketed as New England style?

FWIW, I do prefer them, due to their toasting ability. Work great for lobster rolls, chili dogs, and, well, dogs.

In a more premium hot dog bun I like a fresh chewy bun.

Almost every mass produced (non-bakery) bun I'm come across is not this way though.

We put on a large German festival every year and the buns we get for our bratwurst, weiswurst and knackwurst come from a specific local bakery who makes them fresh and chewy like that.

However to find a bakery local to you, it will probably come to trial and error, stopping into a lot of places.

You might also look for a bakery that makes buns/bread in the classic "French" style (as classic french bread is made). Such bread tends to be only flour, water, yeast and salt ... and is prepared in specific other ways including kneeded like crazy to obtain the chewy consistancy and proper crust that great French bread has.

That definitely is wonderful bread to have with a hot dog or sausage.

When I learned to make bread in this style, in the kneeding method we would screed the fresh dough with the heals of our palms on the block to help the gluten develop and combine with the water ... and then the actual kneeding culminated in what might be called the "fold and slam" method ... where you take the dough you are working, fold it in half, pick it up perpendicular to the long side of the seem, and SLAM it down onto your kneeding surface so it stretches back out as you throw it ... traditionally 800 times. Definitely a specific skill - but great bread.
                                (ok, time for lunch!)

Call the Dog House in Cullman, AL. They carry Vienna Beef products and should be able to give you their contact for the famous S.Rosen/MaryAnn poppy seed or plain buns.
Their phone number is (256) 775-2400.

In New England we have Martin's Potato Rolls. they taste great, are moist & last a long time. They have hot dog & hamburger rolls.

Have a Vienna store in Charlotte, NC. Even though it's a pain in the butt, we get our poppyseed buns from Vienna in Chicago. They're frozen, but after thawing and steaming, they're better than any we found locally. The local buns are gummy and chewy and tend to collapse, even though they're absolutely fresh.

In a 2007 episode of the show, America's Test Kitchen (Cook's Illustrated) taste-tested hot dog buns and rated them, but to see the results now one has to sign up for subscription to the CI magazine.  Zheesh.

Those supermarket buns for $1 don't really cut it. Sometimes you split them open and put on a dog and some toppings and they break apart.

There's some nicer brands but I don't really want to pay $2.99 or $3.29 for some buns, but really maybe I just need to stop being a cheap ass and buy the ones I like.

Pechters/Rockland Bakery (they merged) make good sturdy buns. I think they're a buck for a dozen at the Pechter's store in Harrison if you feel like driving there. Father & Son will sell you a dozen for $2 and change. Rutts Hut will sell the buns they use which are made by Sabrett and pretty good.

Most supermarket brands are of poor quality. Not only do they fall apart, but when you open them 90% of the bun is on one side while the remaining strip is on the other; not split down the middle like they should be.

The S. Rosen's poppy seed bun is a solid bun, and the correct choice for a Chicago-style, without a doubt.  HOWEVER, the greatest bun in all the land is the Sheboygan hard roll!  A real hard roll is shaped more like a hamburger bun, meant for serving up 2 bratwurst to a roll.  But Johnston's Bakery in Sheboygan also makes them for single brats and hot dogs as well.  I realize this probably isn't feasible for you (I don't think they ship) but I wanted to throw it out there anyway.  Mmmmmm, hard rolls....

The technical style is a "semmel roll" so if you can find that anywhere I would strongly recommend it.

I was surprised to discover that top-split "New England Buns" are also pretty common in the South- Georgia, South Carolina even West Virginia.. not sure about Alabama but I bet you could find them.. I feel like I've seen some on "the great birmingham hot dog tour" blog, might be some help there. (Great blog too by the way.. google it, I can't post links!)
