I haven't heard them called hambergs since I was at Wilson's in Ohio last.. mom's side grew up all around Findlay. I miss that place..we still stop there every time we visit her family.

Ontopic.. I actually have to say I like BK's new fries out of fast food stops, and the Outback's chili cheese fries out of sit-downs. Chain-speaking.

I really crave a good steak fry lately though. I'm here to find more home-grown spots in the Waynesboro area, so hopefully I'll pick up a few local hamburger joints with good fries.

Arby's curly fries are the best in my opinion. They are so curly, delicious and mouth-watering.

Does the curliness add to the deliciousness, or is it there for purely asthetic purposes?

Just wondering,

Forget curly. The winner is steak cut crispy on the outside, buttery on the inside.

Nathan’s in Coney Island was always #1. It was followed closely by Thrasher's in Ocean City, MD.
But a few years ago -- in Savannah, GA at Paula Dean’s Restaurant – The Lady & Sons, I discovered something called Jelly Roll's fries. They are a batter dipped fried potato, that are prepared and cooked by their inventor -- a woman named Jelly Roll. They are so outstanding that they gave them her name.
They may not qualify as a true french fry but they may now be my new #1.

Second this vote. Years ago, when they finished off the fries (second cooking) in the beef tallow, those were the best..

Was reading a thread earlier that someone fries their "fries" in duck fat. Has anyone tried this? The best fries I have ever eaten was in Germany. They had these little carts around called (I think) SnellImbus which means something like quick stops. They were delicious, but it has been years since then. I also double fry my fries at home.

AMEN!!! The "frites" in Belgium are the best I've ever had. Living on the France/Belgian border for 4 years, most Saturday nights a group of us would go to Belgium for "saucisse frites"........a paper cornet stuffed with grilled sausage and fries........my choice of dipping sauce was "sauce Americaine" which is mayo with chopped pickle, tomato paste and some hot sauce like Tabasco. Wash it all down with a Belgian beer like Chimay or Rochefort. Divine!

It's not fast food, it's not roadfood, and it's realllly not cheap food, but the best french fries on the planet are at Bouchon, Thomas Keller's bistro in the Venetian in Las Vegas. We ate there last weekend, and Tony Bourdain was right.

Hi,
I second CSD's pick. Pommes frittes for me. I spent sometime in Germany where Yaegerschnitzel mit pommes Frittes was the order of the day, along with copious amounts of Weissen beer! I did not know how they were made, all I knew there was nothing like them. I might have to try the animal fat thing out. I would love to taste them again, and the Weissen beer too! LOL

Another vote for Belgian-style fries. Current favorites for me are at the Alchemist Brewpub in Waterbury, VT (with homemade mayo!) and Hopleaf Belgian Bar/Restaurant in Chicago. Best EVER though were Greek steak fries at an awesome cheapo Greek place in Evanston IL that I think is gone now due to one too many condos beating it out of its space. They were fried in olive oil and seasoned with oregano and rosemary....just amazing.

Yet another vote for the Belgians. In my case, the Pommes Frites at Monk's Cafe in Philadelphia are tops.

I like Chick Fil-A's waffle fries, as well as White Tower's crinkle cuts. I've also found a diner here in Glendale, AZ that serves delectable crinkle cuts.

Taylor's Automatic in San Francisco makes the best damn garlic french fries. Your breath will reek because they use actual garlic instead of salty garlic powder but it's damn good. Pair it with their white pistachio milkshare and you will experience self-indulgent ambrosia. Lori's Diner also makes a good batch of garlic fries as well.

There's few french fry types I don't like.

I like the big fat steakfries, I like the spicy Buffalo fries, and I like the curly fries. The only beef I've ever had was with the local McDonalds, they way over-salt the fries there for some reason.

Crinkle-cut are my least favorite, but do you ever get a craving for them???? I do. But I need one of those red plastic ketchup bottles to squirt ketchup on them, not a Heinz bottle.

No Food Dude,we don't have any chip wagons here in the states unless they do in New York City.Ilove the fries at Chester's Hamburgers in Universal City. It's a local San Antonio,TX chain and they use real potatoes with the skin on like my late mother made them.Had some pretty good fries at Charlie's Grilled Subs in the Olympia Forum Shopping Center in Live Oak.
McDonald's and Wendy's are best hot.I never eat french fries from them late in the evening since I figure they reheat them.

While I second the Belgian Frites notion, I have to put in a vote for the fries at Al's #1 Beef in Chicago. Nothing in the Bay Area comes close.

They serve those types of fries in some restaraunts, the diner-types out here tend to favor them.

That's the only fry they used to serve back when I was in school, did the ketchup thing. I like fries that way with fried fish, memories.

Les Halles on John Street in Lower Manhattan (just off of Fulton Street) has the best frites ever. I'm not sure if those are being considered the same as fries. They are perfectly fried each time, crispy, soft inside, with just the right amount of salt. I don't want to eat fries anywhere else for about a week after out of fear they will ruin the memories.

I had some great fries yesterday at the Amazing Hot Dog in Verona, NJ. This was a stop on the NJ Hot Dog Tour. The fries are twice fried and seasoned with salt & pepper. This place pays great attention to detail and these were a real treat.

Also, try their homemade limeade - it is only $2 and is a great drink.

I am from the southwest Ontario region in Canada. I grew up in Sarnia where we have what are called chip wagons, vehicles equipped with grills and deep fryers. One such "chipmobile" as I like to call them is called Albert's Rolling Lunch which specialized in making french fries. They have been around during the summer months located underneath the Blue Water Bridge that connects Sarnia with Port Huron , Michigan since about late 50s early 60s and have been a local landmark. There would be long lineups at Albert's for people wanting their delicious fresh cut fries. I liked them best with some white vinegar and salt. Then we would eat them by the St. Clair River while the big Laker vessels would sail by on a warm summer's evening. They were the best, and they're still around today.
Are there any places in America tha have "chipmobiles"?

Nice to see a fellow Roadfooder from Southern Ontario!

I have to agree with you FoodDude - Chip Wagons rock! Unfortunately, I can't remember the names or exact locations but the BEST fries I have ever eaten came from a) a chip wagon just outside of Smith Falls near Ottawa (great burger too!) and b) a chip wagon on the way to a friend's cottage on Lake Huron near Owen Sound.

If you should ever be in Kitchener - and Oktoberfest (OkSlobberFest) IS approaching - you should try the chip wagon at Fairway and old King St. Wonderful fries (and good ice cream in the summer). Apparently, they also make the best "Newfie Fries" - fries, cheese, peas (canned), turkey stuffing all covered with gravy. Some people love them. I say they're an acquired taste, at best. UGH.

There's also a decent chip wagon one on Manitou at Bleams in Kitchener.

If you're in Waterloo, there used to be an excellent chip wagon in front of Waterloo Town Square. It's been a permanent fixture for years but with all of the construction/renovation, I'm not sure where it has relocated to. In any event, if you can't find that chip wagon, you can always head for Sonny's at the intersection of University and Weber. When I was a student at U of Waterloo (late '80s) everyone said the grease was old THEN! I'm sure that they haven't changed it since! Good fries and great burgers and dogs.

I just happened to run across this thread while surfing.

We are "mobile" in the Portland, ME area for a few days R&R.

A short while ago we had our evening meal at the Friendly's near the Maine Mall. Wife and I both had fries with our meal. While they were served hot and evidently fresh from the frier, they were absolutely flavorless. Ugh!

It's like people who pour Heinz57 sauce all over a steak and the old joke: do you want a steak with that sauce?

This sounds like the fries are a weird type of casserole, nothing wrong with that.

Dare I say it,
But I actually tend to like the KFC fries here.
I find the McD's fries FAR too salty!.
Also I've found that McD's fries go cold a lot quicker than KFC fries for some wierd reason.

I have a friend that always asks for his fries at McD's without salt. That way they fry a new batch and the ones you get are fresh. Salt them yourself.

Count this as another vote for the Original Hot Dog Shop or "O" here in Pittsburgh. Outstanding fries and in ridiculously large quantities.

Listed in another thread here, the famous All American Drive In, located in Massapequa NY has great fries. Fresh cut in the stand, fried 'til they're brown, served hot, very good.
Also the original Nathan's over in Coney Island, 'specially if you ask for them well done, dark brown with crunchy bits in the bottom of the bag. Good!

If you happen to go to California Adventure in Disneyland, CA, then I highly recommend stopping at Award Weiners in the Hollywood part of the park. They have pretty good dogs, but the shoestring fries are the best I have had, hot and not too salty.

My favourite FF fries are Roy Rogers curly fries. The first time I had them was at a buffet style(ish) rest stop, and I almost completely finished them before I paid. I also like KFC's potato wedges.

I don't get why everyone is saying how awful BK's fries are, I think that they are definately better than Wendy's, and if I stop there at the right time, they are better the McD's

I also love the fries at Matt Murphy's Pub in Brookline Village, MA. They're crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside and they serve it with their own housemade ketchup. Johnny's Luncheonette in Newton Center, MA makes some wicked sweet potato fries with a tarragon-mustard dipping sauce. Crazy good! Don't car much for FF fries as they always seem to have a nasty, chemical type of after taste.

Wendy's fries dipped in their chocolate frosty are pretty darn tastey to us. We do get some funny looks however but that salty-sweet combo do it for me.

That sounds nasty.

Still contend that the Belgians make the best fries.

I have to agree, I think In and Out in Cal. has the best fries going..They use a great frier, the Kennabec Potato, most are sold for potato chips..They have a different fat content than most potatoes. When we had Koblick's Fine Food of Ferndale Ca. A farmer near-by grew them. I'd buy 50 sacks at a time and hold them in a cooler, cut them, wash them and Fry them..They are the best and that is what In and out Uses..

I stopped at an In and Out on a recent trip to Phoenix. The fries were very good - much better than the other burger chains. However - they still do not equal some of the best fries I have eaten where they took the time to use the cooking technique where the fries get cooked twice.

Fiddler's Green in Winter Park, FL and Argyle in Kearney, NJ come to mind as places that seemed to cook their fries (chips) this way.

Regional: Pal's, hands down!

National: Steak 'n' Shake

but any french fries have to be freshly made, otherwise they're not worth the calories.

I have always been partial to Steak 'n Shake fries as well. They seem to always be thin and crisp with just the right amount of salt. They are perfect for dipping in the pot of beans that you ordrered on your Steakburger platter.

I make the best Fries in Ontario.
My fries are so good they need to come with a warning " highly Addictive Product"

I use Vegetable oil and premium potatoes.. My fries go through a 2 stage frying process that makes them nice and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside with a beautifull golden colour...I also sell Hot Dogs,Sausages and burgers...
I open every day at 11am and close when I am tired..LOL
