wierd weather again Fri, 12/1/06 7:56 PM (permalink)
It's 70 degrees just now (7 pm) in NYC - had to take off my sweater when walking home! What is this about snow and sleet around the US?

Weird weather prevails down in my area also. It was up to almost 80 degrees yesterday. Sweater? What the heck is a sweater??? They (weather people) say it's going to get cold this weekend. I think they said the low tomorrow would be 49 degrees. By Tuesday, though, a low of 28 degrees was expected. Insanity, I say.

I am in Houston and yesterday around noon, the temp dropped about 40 degrees in just an hour. It was 75F at 7:00AM and was 35F shortly after that.

Today it warmed up to the mid 50's

        Hello All,
We had weeks in November of semi-warm days and frosty nights.
This past week has been just warm, so warm that I decided
to cut the grass one last time. I shouldn't have to be doing
that here in Hinton, Va. on the first of December. I should
        be thinking of Christmas decorations.
        I started up my Troy-Bilt, that I bought last April/May ( the
memory is going) and took a swipe around the property. The
wind was blowing so hard that I had second thoughts about
mowing, so I start back to where I park it. It stopped.
It died. It won't move or restart. I try and try, but
it won't hear my prayers or respond to my feeble efforts
to restart. I am a mechanical midget. I think to myself,
warranty, and recall that either I or the wife failed to
register our purchase and warranty with Troy-Bilt. I, mentality,
        kick myself in the rear-end.
This makes me more sick than the time I ate sushi, (no offense to
        sushi-lovers.)
But they are calling for a heavy frost, which came. The mowing can
wait. The mower will go to a better mechanic than I,(hope they take
a credit card,) and winter will come, giving my land the rest it needs.
I don't believe we are in a global warming, but rather experiencing
        a climate change or adjustment.
Whatever you call it, the earth is going through something. We'd better
be prepared for it. It is nutty than I am trying to mow my grass
on the first of December. When I was kid, we had snow by now.
We are from the earth, whether you believe in the Bible or Darwin or whoever.
We are all beings, different qualities of life that sprang up, evolved, or was scooped up by
God and molded into what we are. We are dependent on each other and mother earth.
I have always believed that Love was the answer. That is true for our souls.
Now, I see that we must used wise science to help our lives be worthy of Love.
We haven't been good stewards to the earth and to the lives of those of the future.
I love what has been created, yearn for what can discovered without creating harm.
But I'm truly an ignorant fellow. I have no knowledge of the business of making things
happen. I'm a drone and a mourning dreamer.
But I ask you all, why does good change takes so long while bad change can happen so quickly?
I'm sorry. My voice only reflects my frustrations. I have been taught our republic was of
a reflection of the people. All the changes; weather, politics, war, prices, diseases,
all the freaking stresses, and whatever you want to fill into the blank ______; all the changes
in our earth and lives seem so unworthy to have to deal with, but they have to be dealt with.
We are creating so many new problems...but hey, it's your world, or perhaps I'm just too
sensitive and stupid. I know it's always been this way, but it seems worse. I thought
we would make a better world for all, than a better for a few and a worse world for the
        rest.
        Time to shut up.
I love you all. Love and sharing a good meal...that's still nice.
        Take Care,
        Fieldthisle

            Hello All,
NYNM, it sounds strange, but I'd like a little, and I mean, little,
            taste of snow.
We have chance of snow flurries here in the valley, in Virginia.
I work nights, and it's a mild thrill to drive home around 4 a.m.
with snow flying against the car window. I come home, the family is asleep.
I fry up some bacon and make a bacon sandwich. Then as the sun rises, I
put out some bird seed and watch my feathered friends flock on my back
            deck for a meal.
And I'll walk outside to gather some wood for the fireplace, and the snow
and cold kiss my face with winter's first embrace. I feel alive and grateful
            for the birth of winter.
Don't ask me how I'll feel in January . I'll cherish this moment.
By the way, it was so warm a few days ago that we had swarms of flys. I am
still chasing one in the house. The spirit of Life in all God's creatures
            is amazing.
            NYNM, thanks for the thread.

It is even cold in semi tropical Houston. 28F this morning and it has been chilly like that for several days.

Can't wait till I get back to Knoxville where cold and cool is the norm.

Don't ever think it can't happen to you. We got hit by a tornado on Friday night. Fortunately it was dying when it struck us, estimated at an F1. We lost about 40% of the shingles, the chimney cap and some bricks, a 40' pine tree that anchored the right side of the landscaping in front, and our porch eave was hoisted up and put down askew. And the power and heat were out for about 2 days, until Sun PM; the temps were 20s at night, 30s day.

Tornadoes never hit here in Mountain Top. And they never, NEVER hit here in December.

Sorry about the picture stretch; I thought I'd set the upload to 640/480, but it came out at 800/600.

Sorry to hear and see of your weather woes. It is amazing that tree missed all the cars. Hard to feel lucky in such a situation, but at least no one was hurt.

It happened to me about five years ago. Knocked down 21 trees, blocked the street for three days and without power for three days.

Insurance would not cover it because it did no physical damage to my house. Ended up costing me about $20K out of pocket.

Yes, I saw that! And I am going to Santa Fe for Christmas. Funny, the weather in nyc and Santa Fe is usually very similar (temperture-wise) Of course, all my NYC-centric friends think that Santa fe is next to Tuscon and hot hot hot - the would be so surprised!!

Of course, not true! The absolute hottest I've ever experienced there was in June, it was about 88 degrees, with no humidity. The 7200 foot altitude (Santa Fe is the nation's highest and oldest state capitol) has quite a bit to do with it. When I was there this past April, it snowed on the 29th during the evening. How often does it snow that late into the year in NYC?

Go back to Santa Fe! It was a hot 4 degrees there yesterday morning (as in one more than 3!)

Actually it has snowed in May!! (at least my mother told me that, like sometime in 1940 or so)

Apparently there is wierd weather in Europe. Here's a story that its the warmest weather the Alps have seen in 1300 years.

The last few days have been below freezing here in Pittsburgh, yet today it is in the 50's. I didn't even bother wearing a coat to work this morning. But tomorrow, it is supposed to be back to winter weather and we are supposed to be hit with an inch or two of snow. Just in time for me to freeze my butt off at the Steeler-Brown game at night. What a weird winter so far!

I saw on the news this morning that we have had 30 straight days of above average temperatures here in Pittsburgh. Tomorrow is supposd to break that string, but then it will be right back in the 50s for the rest of the week. I don't ever remember a winter quite like this!

In the Chicago area, we have had a really mild winter. We had 11" of snow on Novemeber 30 but it all melted off quickly and we have had temps in the high 40's and low 50's since about the 6th of December. I got an email from a friend who lives in Moriarty, New Mexico who told me it was 6 degrees out this morning! He had 10" of snow around New Years Day and could not get out of his house for 4 days!

                                                Hello All,
I hope this is not a year without a winter.
It has been in the 50's-70's in the daytime since October.
Nights do get cold, thank the Lord.
We still have insects alive. Yesterday, I had a fly buzzing around
the house. Trees are budding and those funky yellow bushes are blooming.
Unsually by now, the kids have had a day or two off from school due to
snow days, but we haven't had a taste of snow.
In the 90's I live in Tuscaloosa, Al. for 5 years. The winters down
there were similiar to what I'm experiencing now here in Virginia.
But, we still have the rest of January and February for winter to
find us. The local ski resort is having a hard time.
I miss..."The weather outside is frightful, but inside here is delightful,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...."
Sorry I was off-key in my singing and probably wrong in the lyrics.
                                                Take Care,

Saturday morning, I was rolling a snowball with my son under the palm trees in my backyard. I was talking to my mom in New Jersey that morning, and she told me it was threatening 70 degrees.

last week we got 3 feet of snow in the northeast heights in albuquerque.
the weight of the snow collapsed our patio roof.
now the weatherman is predicting an even heavier storm between thurs

the weight of the snow collapsed our patio roof.

                                                          night and monday morning.
this time i'm stocking up on rum and diet coke.

Welcome Back!!! We were up in Santa Fe last week for the 3 ft. snow. ABQ airport was a mess, but we got back to NYC on New Years Eve and its been close to 70 almost every day. I had a light sweater on a few days ago with no coat and I was hot, where the week before I had snow up to my hips. SF weather is usually similar to NYC but this was wierd. I spent the whole trip on Wunderground waether & NM Roads websites to see if we'd move at all.

It's terrible about your roof, and the predicted new storm. I think last year there was no snow at all in central NM and the ski area was in bad shape. Sound like there have been 2 major storms already and another one on the way. And floods soon, as the snow melts, I hope not like the Hatch floods of the summer.

Maybe weather is always "wierd" but now with Instant Info we are just overloaded!!

Enjoy rum and diet coke, but what about tequila? Gold or Silver? (Red or Green??)

Hi all,I am new to this forum but I want to say that I personally have my own ideas on this strange climate.
It is alright too if you want to call me crazy I can take it.
But I have been watching jet trails for about 5 years now,one day 5 years back I noticed that the clouds just didn't look as they did when I was a kid,and I noticed that each time a jet went over the contrail lasted and lasted until eventually it was a smudged out sky, sometimes so drastically that it would make a sunny day, eventually cloudy by late afternoon.
I know what you are thinking that I am crazy and un-informed about how jet trails form and atmospheic pressures etc.
But that would be an un-truth as now for all these years I have studied why this would be happening and have actually met others on the web when I search engined "weird longlasting jet trails",who noticed the same anomilies as myself.
Now, finally after so many years apparently the
DISCOVERY CHANNEL is doing a program supposedly to air FEB.8th at 8 p.m.
I am hoping that perhaps the air force and the powers that be will answer questions they ask, that they would not answer to so many of us whom have written and asked about this strange jet business.
Anyways, that is my thought on the weather, sorry I just had to put my 2 or more like 5 cents worth in.
                                                            take care,
