Front and center on the steam table, baked chicken would win any food beauty contest. As for its taste, let me just say that while eating it, my vocabulary was reduced to single-syllable words such as 'wow!' and 'oh!' as well as grunts of pleasure.

I asked the server for extra scrapings from the side of the pan when I ordered my mac 'n' cheese. The result was a dish that was all about texture -- a joy to chew!

One of the best plates of barbecue anywhere in South Carolina, ergo one of the best in the universe. The pulled pork in the foreground is accompanied by unspeakably savory butter beans on the left, a block of freshly-baked cornbread in the middle, and a heap of porky collard greens at the back.

Ribs with smothered cabbage, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread. We dare you not to smile while eating this meal.

Spud heaven! For all who seek real mashed potatoes topped with from-scratch gravy, here is a Holy Grail.

This is the view of the kitchen pass-through from the place you stand and select your meal. Sgt. White's religious point of view permeates his restaurant.

A table at Sgt. White's: one of our favorite places on earth to be.

That sign outside Sgt. White’s is no lie. The Sergeant originally is from Tennessee, but he learned to cook here in the low country. (Add his happy pink pig logo to the long list of porkers who signal great BBQ throughout the South.)

A humble diner on the outskirts of Beaufort, Sgt. White's is a Deep South culinary treasure.

Sweet corn to remember, enriched with plenty of pork and a surfeit of spice, it has such a bold presence on the plate that it almost qualifies as a main dish.

Seven miles from Parris Island, Sgt. White's Diner is neat, clean and eminently polite.
