Super-savory and assertively spiced, this meat pie was a tastebuds-revelation. Easy to eat while driving, too!

There's no sweet simpler than this excellent sugar cookie ... one of many good coffee-companions on the bakery shelves.

This card-table display is on the right as you walk in the door of Champagne's small bakery. The paper-wrapped loaves have a brittle-crisp crust. Those in plastic are soft and spongy.

Because it needs to be refrigerated, and isn't on display in the case, it would be easy to miss this excellent custard-filled dessert.

We especially enjoyed the old-fashioned paper wrapper in which Champagne's freshly baked breads are sold.

Champagne's is no Johnny-come-lately. A Breaux Bridge bakery since 1889, it has a wonderfully weathered aura, inside and out.

We happened upon this modest place while heading out of Breaux Bridge towards Henderson to meet Lionel Robin. It was such a delight that we managed to plan our route to pass by the next morning, too.

We exchanged some memories of the aftermath from Hurricane Katrina with the proprietor, who told us she thought she would never stop crying.

A perfect sausage po-boy made with bread from the Champagne Bakery and sausages from Prause's Meat Market in LaGrange, TX.
