Cream-rich coconut pie is available shortly after the cafe opens at dawn. Our breakfast slice was still warm from the oven.

Where the locals eat in New Harmony, Indiana. We had breakfast at the Main Cafe three days in a row, and by the third day, we knew them and they knew us.

Getting a slice of raisin pie was a photo-finish event for us at 6:45 in the morning. When we sat in a booth, the waitress said she wasn't sure if it would be cool enough to slice by the time we finished breakfast. We lingered over our tenderloins, eggs and pancakes, and when finally we were finished, she announced the pie was ready. It was almost too hot to eat when it arrived at our table, but we managed to clean the plate.

Originally founded by 19th century utopians, New Harmony is a strange and exotic place. But its Main Street cafe is archetypal Midwest Americana.
