Doogie's is an inconspicuous drive-in on the Berlin Turnpike. It is easy to miss, unless you look for the Ruth's Chris Steak House next door. The two eateries are about as different as restaurants can be, except for the simple fact that both define their own form of excellence.

Not everything at Doogie's is huge. Last time we visited, one of the day's specials was a basket of mini corn dogs. Our friend Jim Rains, a native Texan, believed that these little dogs were nearly as good-tasting as those served at the Texas State Fair: high compliment indeed!

On a turnpike crowded with come-hither signs and billboards, Doogie's is a relatively modest place. But its cuisine is a cut above.

What is wrong with this picture? There are no condiments on the hot dog! We left it bare to show its length, but then piled on mustard, relish and onions ... and did our best to eat it all.

Doogie's dogs are cooked on the grill, then charred over coals if desired. Two-footers, waiting to be cooked, are in the background.

"Doogie's boasts that it serves the "Best Philly Outside Philly." It is mighty good, especially the chunky, moist, full-flavored beef and caramel-sweet onions. The cheese here is a little wan, but I managed to polish it off with ease! Options include: BBQ sauce, hot peppers, lettuce & tomato."
