In the foreground is one of two pierogi that I ordered as a side dish to go with the wonderful length of kielbasa in back at the left and, of course, a heap of fine sauerkraut at the right. If you order pierogi as a meal, you get five of them.

The selection of beers and soft drinks is impressive, but I walked past these tubs and helped myself at the soda machine, which has Vernor's ginger ale on tap.

I first came across halushka -- a mix of dumplings and cabbage -- in a Hungarian restaurant in Akron. Whether it's Polish or Hungarian, or both, I don't know. But I do know it is delicious. The cabbage gives it a hint of sweetness and the dumplings, while substantial, are refined.

As is traditional in cafeterias, desserts are first in the line, and while the cakes and pies look swell, I could not resist a cup of egg custard pudding dotted with tender grains of rice.

This bastion of Old World cooking is in the good hands of a third generation of Sokolowskis. Note the Cleveland city skyline, just the other side of the Cuyahoga, reflected in its windows.

Before you step into the cafeteria line, you can browse a rack of polka CD's for sale on the left, just behind Santa's left shoulder.
