The house and neighborhood special is the breaded steak sandwich with red sauce, mozzarella, and sweet peppers. This messy, yet perfect, sandwich held together to the last bite due in part to perfect bread!

A side view of the breaded steak sandwich. The young lady who took our order told us the steak is pan-fried rather than deep-fried.

One of the last of the small-scale Chicago bottlers, Filbert's Sodas, are featured at Uncle Johnny's. They come in dozens of flavors including pineapple and banana.

Uncle Johnny's Grocery is a corner Italian grocery in the middle of a working class neighborhood. Small by today's standards, the look and feel really grabs you as you enter. Uncle Johnny's is over seventy years old; the original wooden coolers from its butcher days remain along with ceiling meat hooks used to hang sides of beef.

Right in the middle of the neighborhood.
"Right in the middle of the neighborhood."
