Cassell's Hamburgers

3266 West 6th St., Los Angeles, CA - (213) 387-5502
The menu at this cafeteria-style lunch-only hamburger joint is short and simple. The basic choice is which size you want: big (1/3 pound) or bigger (2/3 pound). We recommend the latter. You can add Swiss or American cheese to make a cheeseburger, and available side dishes include steak fries, potato salad (mustard-supercharged and wonderful!), fried zucchini, and onion rings.

"The banner out front proclaiming Cassell's hamburger to be the world's best is droopy and could use a cleaning. As retail business in the neighborhood (now Koreatown) has faded, crowds of hungry locals no longer fill the place every day at noon. The place is bare and ..."   [Read More]

"After reading the glowing review of Cassell's, I couldn't wait to try it once I moved to Los Angeles. The burger, cooked on a double broiler, sounded so amazing it was all I could think about for days. Finally I arrived in L.A. and drove there immediately. My mouth ..."   [Read More]

Cassell's is proud of its double grill, where the hand-formed patties get cooked from both sides at once.

While not eye-poppingly different, the 1000 Islands dressing and the mayo are fresh indeed, made in Cassell's kitchen. Ketchup and mustard are standard-issue.

The menu refers to the potatoes as steak fries. They're crisp and a good vehicle for hoisting ketchup or dressing from plate to mouth, but they pretty much lack intrinsic flavor.

A lot of people (including ourselves) have sung the praises of Cassell's hamburgers over the years.

L.A. used to be known as a source of great hamburgers. Even though local cuisine has taken an ultra trendy path (molecular gastronomy, anyone?), it remains a city with plenty of good burger choices.
