Pepe's Cafe & Steak House

806 Caroline St., Key West, FL - (305) 294-7192
Pepe's boasts of being “the eldest eating house in the Florida Keys,” and it sure does have the feel of a place that’s seen it all. The old wood dining room is covered with nick-nacks as miscellaneous as grandma’s attic. The three-meal-a-day menu ranges from homemade bread of the day every morning to oysters galore at suppertime.

The morning of the Fourth of July, Pepe's breakfast special was French toast drizzled with red berry and blueberry cream and sprinkled with coconut shreds: red, white and blue!

Character abounds on the old wood walls of this ancient cafe. This view is into the patio, where many customers prefer dining under shade trees strung with ornamental lights.

Each table is set with a panoply of condiments: handy for many foods, but required by those who like to doll up raw oysters.

Key West has its share of restaurants that strive to impress customers with sophistication and savoir faire. Pepe's is not one of them.
