Ramon's

535 Oakhurst St., Clarksdale, MS - (662) 624-9230
It is, to understate the point, a less-than-handsome restaurant far off the beaten path in a residential neighborhood. A full order of fried butterflied shrimp is a dozen, each the size of a moon pie. What a feast! The fried chicken livers are sensational: unspeakably rich, luxuriously crunchy, and filling beyond all measure.

The Italian influence is huge in Mississippi Delta cooking; and spaghetti is an excellent foil for the house specialty, fried chicken livers. However the livers are so filling that we found it impossible to do more than dip into the heap of noodles.

Good and garlicky, Ramon's salad perfectly whets one's whistle for the fried-food orgy to come.

The dining room is dimly lit, but not exactly what we would call romantic. Homemade lamps are formed from emptied wine and liquor bottles.

Roger Stolle, proprietor of Clarksdale's Cathead Delta Blues and Folk Art store, knows Mississippi culture better than anyone we've met. When he recommends a place, we go! He told us that he and his wife Jennifer live near Ramon's and consider it their favorite restaurant other than Uncle Henry's at Moon Lake.
