Cole Farms

64 Lewiston Rd., Gray, ME - (207) 657-4714
Opened as a farmland diner in 1952, Cole Farms still can be relied on to serve boiled dinner in the autumn, corn chowder and chicken pot pie every Wednesday, and a choice of pea beans or kidney beans accompanied by one or two bright red Maine-style weenies. Have muffins for breakfast and old-fashioned Indian pudding for dessert, or choose such modern dishes as taco salad, grilled teriyaki chicken and "gourmet cheesecake."

Bright red weenies are a Maine tradition. At Cole Farms, you get one or two with a choice of pinto beans or pea beans. These are the pintos.

Despite its name, American chop suey is actually more Italo-American than Chinese-American. For many Downeasters, this combination of soft elbow macaroni, hunks of beef, and mild red sauce is essential comfort food.

We've never seen Grape Nuts pudding outside of New England, but it is a cafe-and-diner staple throughout the region.

Off the well-traveled coastal route, Cole Farms attracts some tourists but is primarily a place where locals come to eat: three meals a day, every day.

While it is now a large, sprawling restaurant with multiple dining rooms, Cole Farms maintains the feel of a cozy country diner.
