Super Duper Weenie

306 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, CT - (203) 334-DOGS
As you might suspect from its name, the house specialty is a hot dog. It is a firm-fleshed, locally-made weenie that is split and cooked on the grill until its outside gets a little crusty but the inside stays succulent. Whatever else you get, you must get French fries. These are beautiful, fresh cut twigs of potato.

"Formerly a mobile truck selling hot dogs by the side of the road, Super Duper Weenie is now a stationary restaurant with indoor seating. As you might suspect from its name, the house specialty is a hot dog. It is a firm-fleshed, locally-made weenie that is split and ..."   [Read More]

"As good as a hot dog can get! I visit my hometown (Fairfield) every summer and I've made it a point to come to Super Duper Weenie, starting seven years or so ago, when the place was still on wheels. Although the prices are a little high for hot dogs, who can blame ..."   [Read More]

"Ever know a place that's popular and you can't for the life of you figure out why? That's Super Duper Weenie. I have been there three times to give it the benefit of the doubt, just in case my first time was an off-day. Nope. Still bad every time. The dogs are ..."   [Read More]

"I concur with the commentary. The food at this restaurant actually tastes like something special. Most hotdogs taste salty. You maybe taste some mustard flavor, but there isn't a lot of complexity to the dish. The dogs at Super Duper taste as complex as a fine ..."   [Read More]

"While I agree with the overall opinion that Super Duper makes a good dog, I believe that there are better dogs to be had. I've had the Dixie dog, New Englander, and New York dog. The dogs are tasty and have a nice snap. The combinations are interesting. I was not ..."   [Read More]

What a Pair! Two New Englanders, topped with sauerkraut, bacon, mustard, sweet relish, and raw onion. The bacon is buried underneath the dogs, and the mustard is eclipsed by the sauerkraut and sweet relish.

There is nothing fancy or outrageous about it, but this just might be the Platonic hamburger, i.e. ground beef perfection. It is a 6.5 ounce mound of ground chuck and sirloin that is wildly juicy and, with Chef Gary's wicked-good salt-n-peppered crust, insanely flavorful.

Three sizes of French fries are available. This is a 'small' boat. Fries are an essential part of the Super Duper Weenie dining experience.

This is a single order of onion rings ($2.50). It's not a huge quantity, but each one is a multi-bite item to savor.

Super Duper Weenie recently added the capabability to make milk shakes. This chocolate shake is thick enough to support a straw. Strawberry shakes are made directly from pureed strawberries.

Traditionalists miss the mobile truck that was Super Duper Weenie (and is now SDW's catering operation, but this firmly-planted restaurant has all the charm and sass of the eatery-on-wheels ... and the same fantastic food.

A close view of the Chicagoan shows how the split dog is laid upon tomato slices and is, in turn, topped with condiments.

One of the great things to eat other than a hot dog: the Mighty-Ity. Short for 'Mighty Italian,' it is sweet or hot sausage with grilled peppers and onions and cheese on a Portuguese roll.

Chef Gary was lamenting to us that local ordinances have virtually eliminated neon signs from the Fairfield landscape. His sign is legal because it is behind the window rather than in front of it.
