The bagels are modest-size hoops that are boiled and then baked in a wood-fired oven that adds a smoky note to the flavor of dough that is nearly as sweet as challah bread. Especially good are the sesames and the onion bagels, the latter having a tawny skin spangled with charred bits of onion that add welcome pizzazz.

There are a couple of other St. Viateurs around Montreal, but this one is the original. The window sign says

We sure wish Roadfood.com had some sort of scratch-and-sniff type module. The earthy, slightly smoky aroma of these sesame bagels cannot be described in words.
