Schwartz's

3895 St. Laurent, Montreal, XX - (514) 842-4813
The window of Schwartz's, opened in 1928, is filled smoked meat – piles of whole brick-red briskets packed with coarse, black spice. The line nearly always stretches out the door. The countermen assemble each sandwich with meat piled so high that the bread perched atop one half tumbles off as you seize the other half to eat.

A close view of a smoked meat sandwich we ordered 'fatty.' To our taste, it was just right: warm, spicy meat with just the right amount of fat to infuse every bite with sheer succulence.

The window display at Schwartz's won't likely win any design awards, but for customers waiting in line, these spiced, smoked briskets are a beautiful thing.

These excellent French fries are among a number of side dishes to complement a sandwich. Also available are half-sour and dill pickles, pickled red peppers, olives and cole slaw.

Not kosher, but kosher-style, Schwartz's was started in 1928 by Romanian immigrant Rueben Schwartz. It's enough of a Montreal institution to have inspired its own stage play: 'Schwartz's: The Musical.'

Smoked meat is great, but what launches a deli sandwich into the stratosphere is excellent rye bread. At Schwartz's, it is impeccably fresh and, with plenty of mustard, meat's best friend.

This is a smoked meat sandwich with medium fat. It is the most tender meat I have ever eaten... it falls apart as soon as you pick it up! Well worth it after trekking through Mt. Royal to get there (in the rain!).

The crowd is an essential part of the Schwartz's experience. Needless to say, this boisterous eat place is not where you want to go for a romantic meal or private conversation.
