Feed

2803 W. Chicago, Chicago, IL - (773) 489-4600
The interior is an ode to hens and eggs and cocks and chicks. Feed features a menu of country comfort that includes WondeRoast rotisserie chicken (oh, so tender, moist and full-flavored), velvety pulled pork in zippy dark red sauce and, best of all, a long roster of masterfully-cooked, mostly Southern-style vegetables.

Barbecue chicken sandwich, mac 'n' cheese, and mashed potatoes with great chicken gravy - bread, pasta, and potatoes, a starch lovers dream.

We like this old-fashioned looking sign, but we later discovered that WondeRoast is a for-real company from Minnesota. They sell chicken rotisserie systems all over the country. Presumably, Feed uses their equipment.

Yes, roast chicken is their signature dish. Yet they had none available the evening we were there for dinner!

My five-vegetable dinner, from the upper left: collard greens soaking in porky pot likker, succotash, roasted corn, mac-n-cheese and whipped sweet potatoes. Darn, I forgot to get a piece of cornbread to sop and push and crumble around the plate.

Here's a quarter-chicken – two pieces of dark meat – sided by corn pudding and beet salad. This chicken is supreme, a joy to pull from the bone in long, luscious strips.

Sweet Home, Chicago. Eating in a place like this makes me so proud that Chicago is my home town. It's new and it's probably hip (what do I know?), but it's also friendly, folksy and comfortable.

Place your order at the Feed counter. When we arrived there were a bunch of dishes visible on the stove and grill just behind it that had not yet been put on the blackboard up above.

Jane won a teeny-weeny finger ring at the Lucky Chicken machine. Each egg-laying is accompanied by a silly mechanical cackle.

In addition to this above-the-order-counter menu, which changes as new dishes are cooked and other ones eaten up, Feed offers a different special every day. Monday is chicken and sausage gumbo. Tuesday is smothered pork chops. Wednesday is Prince Spaghetti nite (!?). Thursday is the Chicago delight, chili-mac. And Friday is fried catfish.
