Woodside Farm Creamery

1310 Little Baltimore Road, Hockessin, DE - (302) 239-9847
Woodside Farms calls their ice cream "Farm Fresh." The ice cream they make and sell is produced from milk provided by the Jersey cows right here on their farm. This ice cream is extraordinarily thick and dense. Although the Mitchell family has been making ice cream only since 1998, the farm goes back to the late 18th century.

Woodside Farm is a particularly nice destination because of its al fresco picnic tables with a view of Jersey cattle grazing. The cows' splendid yield has a lot to do with their mood. 'The pasture-based system isn't the most efficient way to keep cattle,' proprietor Jim Mitchell told me. 'But it is easy on the cows. And cow comfort is important. Happy cows mean good milk.'

You can almost feel the thick dairy texture of Woodside's ice cream in this close-up of a dish of raspberry chip.

Like many farms near urban areas, Woodside puts on special events throughout the year. Farming alone won't keep them afloat. Today's event was a scarecrow workshop.
